Where to stay in Pokhara — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Pokhara is the kind of place that wins you over the moment you open the curtains — the jagged peak of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the Annapurna range mirrored on the still surface of Phewa Lake. It's three things at once: a laid-back lakeside town, Nepal's adventure capital (world-class paragliding), and the gateway to the Annapurna trekking circuit. This guide helps you pick the right neighbourhood to stay, plus the attractions and food worth your time.
Why stay in Pokhara
Himalayan views, no trek required
Sip coffee on the shore of Phewa Lake and you're already looking at Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the Annapurna peaks. At around 1,000 m, the climate stays mild year-round.
World-class paragliding
Pokhara ranks among the best tandem-paragliding spots on the planet. Launch from Sarangkot, float over the lake with the Himalaya behind you — no experience needed.
Gateway to the Annapurna treks
It's the launch pad for Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill. Sort your ACAP and TIMS permits in Lakeside before you set off.
A slower, calmer pace
Unlike hectic Kathmandu, Pokhara is built for unwinding — lakeside cafes, bookshops, spas, and a boat ride out to the island temple of Tal Barahi.

Coming soon

Coming soon
SarangkotA hill village about 3 km above Lakeside — the famous sunrise viewpoint and main paragliding launch. Stay here for full Himalayan views at dawn without the crowds.
Coming soon
Begnas LakeA second lake about 40 minutes out — quieter and more rural than Phewa, with lake-view resorts among the hills and rice terraces. For travellers who want real calm.

🚆 Getting around Pokhara
Pokhara International Airport (PKR)
The new airport opened in 2023, about 3 km from the centre and ~10 km from Lakeside. Flights from Kathmandu take 25–30 minutes; a taxi to Lakeside runs around NPR 300–500.
Tourist bus from Kathmandu
Tourist buses leave Kathmandu around 7am for the ~200 km, 6–8 hour trip. Tickets run roughly NPR 800–1,600 (VIP/sofa buses cost more). Book through any guesthouse.
E-rickshaws & taxis in town
Electric rickshaws are the cheapest, easiest way along the Lakeside strip — flag one anywhere. Taxis charge per trip; always agree the fare before you get in.
Bike & scooter rental
Lakeside is full of bicycle and scooter rentals — handy for cycling along the lake or riding out to Davis Falls and the World Peace Pagoda on your own.
Nepali Rupee (NPR) & cash
The currency is the Nepali Rupee. Bigger hotels and shops take cards, but small eateries, boats and tickets are cash-only. ATMs and money changers line Lakeside (USD is easy to exchange).

When is the best time to visit Pokhara?+
October to April is best — clear skies, sharp mountain views and mild weather (around 20–30°C), especially October–November right after the monsoon. Avoid June–September, when heavy rain often hides the peaks behind cloud.
Which area should I stay in?+
Most visitors stay in Lakeside (Baidam), right on the water and walkable to cafes, restaurants and the boat jetty. For something quieter and cheaper, choose Damside; for dawn mountain views, stay up in Sarangkot.
How do I get to Pokhara from Kathmandu?+
The fastest option is a 25–30 minute flight into Pokhara International Airport. Otherwise, a tourist bus takes about 6–8 hours over the 200 km — cheaper, and you get scenery along the way.
