Where to stay in Chitwan — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Picture waking up in a riverside lodge along the Rapti, mist still hanging over the elephant grass, and a wild one-horned rhino grazing just meters away. That's the magic of Chitwan, in Nepal's lowland Terai and home to Chitwan National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the country's very first national park. This isn't the Himalayan Nepal of trekking postcards; it's steamy jungle, wildlife safaris, and the living culture of the Tharu people who have shared this forest for generations. The gateway town of Sauraha is where everything begins: dugout canoe trips, jeep safaris tracking Bengal tigers, and sunsets over the river that stop you in your tracks. This guide walks you through where to stay, what to see, and what to eat so your Chitwan trip delivers on every level.
Why stay in Chitwan
Rhino sightings near-guaranteed
Chitwan holds the world's second-largest one-horned rhino population, around 694 animals. A 2-3 day safari gives you a 90%+ chance of spotting one — few wildlife destinations come close to that hit rate.
Nepal's first national park
Established in 1973 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, it protects one of the last intact Terai lowland forests, with Bengal tigers, wild elephants, and gharial crocodiles.
Living Tharu culture
The indigenous Tharu have lived alongside this jungle for centuries. Catch a traditional stick dance, visit the cultural museum, or stay in a Tharu homestay to experience daily life firsthand.
Affordable and easy to reach
Rooms start at budget prices and safaris cost a fraction of African equivalents. Tourist buses connect Sauraha to Kathmandu and Pokhara, making it ideal for backpackers and families alike.

When is the best time to visit Chitwan?+
October-November and February-March are ideal: pleasant weather, clear skies and excellent wildlife viewing. The monsoon (June-September) brings tall grass that hides animals plus flood risk, while the hot season (April-May) is sweltering but draws animals to water, making them easier to spot.
Will I actually see rhinos and tigers?+
Rhinos, almost certainly — a 2-3 day safari has a 90%+ sighting rate thanks to Chitwan's roughly 694 one-horned rhinos. Bengal tigers (around 128) are shy and mostly nocturnal, so sightings are far rarer and count as a bonus if you're lucky.
Can I still ride elephants, and what should I choose?+
Conservation groups now strongly discourage elephant rides in favor of jeep safaris, jungle walks, canoe trips and elephant-viewing walks, which are more ethical and give a fuller view of wildlife in the wild. We'd steer you toward a jeep safari as your main activity.
