Where to stay in Lumbini — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Lumbini is the birthplace of the Buddha, where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama around 563 BCE on the Terai plains of southern Nepal, in Rupandehi District just north of the Indian border. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, its Sacred Garden centres on the Maya Devi Temple, which shelters the exact marker stone of the birth, alongside the Ashoka Pillar raised by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, the Pushkarini sacred pond, and an ancient Bodhi tree draped in prayer flags. Ringing the garden are monasteries built by more than 20 nations — from Thailand and Myanmar to China, Korea and Sri Lanka — making Lumbini one of the most serene pilgrimage and reflection stops in all of Asia.
Why stay in Lumbini
One of Buddhism's four holiest sites
Lumbini is where the Buddha's story begins — the spot where Prince Siddhartha was born. It is one of the four great pilgrimage sites every Buddhist hopes to visit at least once in a lifetime.
Proof carved in ancient stone
The Ashoka Pillar bears a Brahmi inscription naming this as the Buddha's birthplace — the oldest inscription in Nepal — while the Maya Devi Temple encases the marker stone under bulletproof glass.
The world's monasteries in one garden
The East (Theravada) and West (Mahayana/Vajrayana) Monastic Zones gather temples from Thailand, Myanmar, China, Korea, Sri Lanka and Germany — a full day of strolling through wildly different architecture.
A rare, deep stillness
Nearly 200 hectares of canals, mature trees, birdsong and monks in walking meditation make the Sacred Garden a genuine refuge from the noise of everyday travel.

🚆 Getting around Lumbini
Gautam Buddha International Airport (Bhairahawa)
The nearest airport sits at Bhairahawa, about 22km from Lumbini, with domestic flights from Kathmandu (~30 min) and Pokhara (~20 min). From there it's a 30-minute taxi or local bus into Lumbini.
Buses from Kathmandu & Pokhara
Regular buses run from both cities (Pokhara is about 203km / ~8 hours away), mostly departing in the morning. The budget option if you're not in a hurry.
Bikes & e-rickshaws in the garden
The Sacred Garden is huge, so most visitors rent a bicycle (around NPR 200/day) or hop on a pedal/electric rickshaw waiting near the main gate to reach the monasteries on both sides.
Taxis & local auto-rickshaws
Taxis and auto-rickshaws shuttle between Bhairahawa, Lumbini Bazaar and the garden — agree the fare before you set off. Handy for off-site sites like Tilaurakot (ancient Kapilvastu).
Cash & entry fees
Nepali rupees (NPR) are king and small shops are cash-only, so change money in Bhairahawa. The Sacred Garden charges a foreigner entry fee — carry cash for tickets and rentals.
