🚆 Getting around Kathmandu
Tribhuvan International (KTM)
Nepal's only international airport, about 6 km from Thamel. Visa on arrival is available, and there are ATMs and currency-exchange counters in the terminal.
Taxi from the airport
Use the prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal to avoid being overcharged. Thamel runs around NPR 800–1,000 (~$6–8). Pay in Nepali rupees (NPR).
Ride apps: Pathao / InDrive
In town, use Pathao (fixed prices) or InDrive (you make an offer) — much cheaper than street taxis. You'll need a local SIM and data first.
Cash is king
The Nepali rupee (NPR) rules — small shops and taxis are cash-only, so carry small notes. Rupees can't legally leave the country; change leftovers back before you fly.
Walking + hired car for day trips
Tourist districts are walkable but traffic is heavy and dusty — bring a mask. For day trips to Bhaktapur or Nagarkot, hiring a car with driver is easiest.
