Mozambique — find the right stay, from deciding to booking

“Clear Indian Ocean waters, the Bazaruto Archipelago, whale sharks and mantas, and a World Heritage Portuguese island”

Mozambique is a hidden gem of East Africa — with Indian Ocean waters as clear as the Maldives that remain almost untouched by tourists. The Bazaruto Archipelago and Tofo Beach are famous for diving with whale sharks and mantas, the Island of Mozambique is a Portuguese World Heritage town, the Fort of São Sebastião is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere, the herb-grilled piri-piri prawns are legendary, and the lively marrabenta music gives it all a heartbeat — a land few people know, yet one of the best values in Africa.

🚆 Getting around Mozambique

✈️

Domestic flights

LAM Mozambique Airlines flies Maputo-Beira-Pemba-Vilanculos, the most convenient option since the country is very long.

🚗

Rental car with driver

Roads outside the cities are rough, so renting a car with a guide-driver beats driving yourself, especially in heavy rain.

Ferry

Boats run from Vilanculos to the Bazaruto islands, and from Nampula to the Island of Mozambique.

🚌

Intercity buses

Chapas and cheap buses connect the major cities, but they're slow and crowded — suited to budget travelers.

🚕

Taxis and tuk-tuks in town

Maputo has taxis and the Uber ride app in the city; in the provinces, negotiate the price first.

🛂 Etiquette & culture in Mozambique

🤝

Greetings

Long handshakes with inquiries about each other's wellbeing — greeting promptly is an important courtesy.

📸

Always ask before taking photos

Photographing locals requires asking first, especially in rural areas.

🕌

Dress modestly at religious sites

Cover shoulders and legs when entering mosques or churches — the northern coast has many Muslims.

💱

Cash is preferred

Outside the capital, cards are rarely accepted — carry enough metical or US dollar cash.

🎵

Maputo has live music every night, with marrabenta and marrabenta as cultural signatures.

How do I get a visa?+

Apply for an e-visa/VOA + a yellow fever vaccination certificate, and check the latest conditions at the embassy before traveling, as they can change.

Where can I dive with whale sharks?+

Tofo Beach in Inhambane province, the most famous spot in Mozambique, with the best chances from Oct–Feb.

Is Mozambique safe?+

Tips before you go to Mozambique

  1. Learn a little Portuguese — "obrigado" (thank you) makes locals smile and improves the service a lot.
  2. Bring mosquito repellent and antimalarials, as Mozambique has a malaria risk.
  3. Exchange metical at the airport or a bank — the market rate is better than at hotels.
  4. Book diving in advance at Tofo, especially from Oct–Feb when it's busy.
  5. Piri-piri prawns at small seaside spots are often tastier than at resorts and half the price.
  6. Carry bottled water — tap water in Mozambique shouldn't be drunk directly.
