Where to stay in Maputo — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Maputo is Mozambique's capital on the Indian Ocean, a bayside city locals call the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean." It blends Victorian-era Portuguese architecture along wide tree-lined avenues, the riot of color at the capulana cloth markets, live marrabenta music spilling out of bars after dark, and plates of peri-peri grilled prawns eaten by the water at sunset. Still off the typical tourist trail, it rewards visitors with genuine character and some of the friendliest people in Africa.
Why stay in Maputo
Striking Portuguese architecture
The CFM Central Railway Station with its green dome (Time ranked it the 3rd most beautiful station in the world in 2015), the wrought-iron Casa de Ferro, and rows of colonial-era buildings throughout the Baixa downtown.
Fresh seafood meets peri-peri
Prawns and crab landed straight from the bay, grilled and drenched in fiery peri-peri sauce. A delicious mash-up of Portuguese, Indian and East African flavors you won't find anywhere else.
A living music and art scene
Marrabenta is the city's homegrown sound, heard live in its bars. Pair it with a visit to Núcleo de Arte, the country's oldest artists' collective, founded in 1921.
Affordable and warm-hearted
Cheaper than many African capitals, with guesthouses from around €50 a night and famously welcoming locals. A capital that still feels uncrowded and real.

When is the best time to visit Maputo?+
The dry season from May to October is best — cooler, less humid and with little rain. July is the coolest at around 25°C, while January–February are hot, humid and wet.
Do I need a visa in advance?+
It depends on your nationality. Many travelers apply for an eVisa online, and some are eligible for a visa on arrival, but rules change often (there's a new ETA system). Check the latest requirements and sort it at least 48 hours before flying.
Is Maputo safe, and what language is spoken?+
Polana, Sommerschield, Costa do Sol and the central city are comfortable to walk by day. Watch your valuables and avoid walking alone at night. Portuguese is the official language, though English gets you by in tourist areas.
