Where to stay in Tofo — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Tofo (Praia do Tofo) is a tiny, sandy-streeted beach village on the Indian Ocean in Mozambique's Inhambane Province, and it has earned the nickname Whale Shark Capital of Africa. It's one of very few places on Earth where you can swim with whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales almost year-round. The vibe is laid-back and backpacker-friendly: a handful of dirt roads, world-class surf breaks at Tofinho, and fresh-off-the-boat seafood cooked Portuguese-Mozambican style. It's a place for travelers who'd rather trade resort gloss for the real, slow rhythm of the ocean.
Why stay in Tofo
Swim with ocean giants
One of the few spots worldwide with reliable whale shark and manta ray sightings. The Marine Megafauna Foundation chose Tofo as its research HQ because the mantas live here rather than just passing through.
Mozambique's surf capital
The main Tofo bay is forgiving for beginners, while Tofinho and Back Door deliver heavier waves for confident surfers. Surf schools rent boards and run lessons.
Authentic, unhurried village
Just a few sandy lanes and roughly 8-12 places to eat — no high-rise resorts. Perfect if you want a real, slow beach instead of a packaged one.
Fresh seafood, fair prices
Prawns and lobster come off the boats the same day, grilled peri-peri style or stewed into matapa — Portuguese-Mozambican cooking you won't easily find elsewhere.

🚆 Getting around Tofo
Fly into Inhambane Airport (INH)
A small airport just a few kilometers from Tofo, with domestic flights from Maputo. From there, grab a taxi or chapa straight into Tofo — by far the fastest option.
Bus from Maputo (~8-10 hrs)
Tofo is about 450 km from Maputo. Take a Maputo-Beira bus (City Link, Nagi, JM) and get off at Maxixe, then continue by ferry and chapa.
Chapa (local minibus)
From Inhambane or Maxixe, hop a chapa (shared minibus) into Tofo. It's the cheapest way but packed, and it leaves only once full.
Maxixe-Inhambane ferry
Coming via the north-south highway, alight at Maxixe and take the ferry across the bay to Inhambane before a chapa to Tofo — the classic backpacker route.
Carry enough metical (MZN) cash
Tofo is small and its ATMs often run out of cash, so withdraw metical in a bigger town first. Visa cards are accepted more widely than Mastercard.

How do I get from Maputo to Tofo?+
Tofo is roughly 450 km from Maputo, about 8-10 hours by land — take a bus to Maxixe, then the ferry across to Inhambane plus a chapa into Tofo. Or fly domestically into Inhambane Airport (INH) and take a short taxi/chapa, which is much faster.

The currency is the Mozambican metical (MZN). Tofo's ATMs frequently run out of cash, so withdraw enough in Maputo or Inhambane beforehand. Most places take cash, and Visa cards work better than Mastercard.
