Where to stay in Ilha de Mocambique — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Ilha de Mocambique (the Island of Mozambique) is a tiny coral island just 3 km long and under 500 m wide off Mozambique's northern coast, yet it packs in more history than almost anywhere in Africa. For over four centuries it served as the colonial capital of Portuguese East Africa, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Wander the narrow stone lanes and you'll pass pastel colonial mansions, a vast sea fort, mosques, Catholic churches and a Hindu temple all standing just steps apart, a living blend of Swahili, Arab, Indian and Portuguese cultures layered over a thousand years. This guide helps you pick the right neighborhood, plan what to see, and find the best seafood on an island that feels frozen in time.
