Where to stay in Kampala — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Kampala, Uganda's vibrant capital, sprawls across lush green hills just north of Lake Victoria. The city famously grew on seven hills (Mengo, Rubaga, Namirembe, Makerere, Kololo, Nakasero and Old Kampala), each with its own story and place of worship. It buzzes day and night, from the chaotic energy of Owino Market, East Africa's largest, to the 360-degree views from the minaret of the Gaddafi National Mosque, and the famously restless nightlife of Kabalagala. It's also the natural launchpad for any Uganda adventure, whether you're heading off to track gorillas or chase a safari.
Why stay in Kampala
A city on seven hills
Kampala spread across its seven legendary hills, each crowned by a place of worship and layers of history. The hilltop views are gorgeous from any angle, especially at golden hour.
Nightlife that never sleeps
Kabalagala, Kololo and Bugolobi overflow with bars, clubs and lounges. Drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is pure, infectious East African fun well into the small hours.
Markets and living culture
Owino Market is the beating heart of city commerce, selling everything from fresh produce to secondhand finds. The Ndere Centre stages traditional Ugandan dance several nights a week.
Gateway to Uganda's wild side
Use Kampala as your base before tracking gorillas in Bwindi, going on safari at Murchison Falls, or rafting the source of the Nile. It's where every Uganda trip begins.

🚆 Getting around Kampala
Entebbe Airport (EBB)
Uganda's main international airport is about 40km from Kampala, roughly 45 minutes via the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway. Pre-booking a transfer or a private hire taxi is the easiest option.
Boda-boda (motorbike taxis)
The fastest way to beat traffic, with fares around UGX 5,000-15,000. Use an app like SafeBoda for fixed prices and a helmet, which is safer than hailing one on the street.
Matatu (minibuses)
14-seat minibuses run citywide and to Entebbe for as little as UGX 5,000. They leave once full, and the main hub is the Old Taxi Park in the centre.
Special-hire & ride apps
Special-hire taxis run UGX 50,000-200,000 depending on distance, so agree the fare first. Uber and Bolt both operate in the city and are more convenient with transparent pricing.
Cash & payments
The Uganda Shilling (UGX) rules. Carry small notes; Mobile Money (MTN/Airtel) is everywhere. Cards are only accepted at malls and big hotels, so change money in advance.

Is Kampala safe for tourists?+
Generally yes, with common sense. Kololo and Nakasero are safe and busy. Watch your valuables in markets and crowds, avoid walking alone late at night, and use ride apps (Uber, Bolt, SafeBoda) instead of hailing rides after dark.
Which area should I stay in?+
Kololo is best for first-timers wanting safety and views, Nakasero is the convenient city-centre choice, Bugolobi is quiet and family-friendly, and Munyonyo offers lakeside resorts for a relaxed stay.
How do I get from Entebbe Airport to Kampala?+
Entebbe Airport is about 40km away, roughly 45 minutes via the expressway. The easiest option is a pre-booked transfer or private hire taxi. Matatus (minibuses) are cheapest but slower and leave only once full.
