Where to stay in Entebbe — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
If you're flying into Uganda, Entebbe is where your trip begins. It's home to Entebbe International Airport, the country's main gateway, and sits on a leafy peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. Once the colonial-era seat of government before Uganda's independence in 1962, the town keeps a calm, green, unhurried feel that's a world away from the bustle of Kampala, about 40 km up the road. Plenty of travellers treat Entebbe as a one-night stopover before safari, but it rewards anyone who lingers: a century-old botanical garden, a genuinely good wildlife centre, quiet lakeshore beaches, and boat trips to spot the prehistoric-looking shoebill or rescued chimpanzees on a nearby island. This guide covers where to stay, what to see, and what to eat in Entebbe.

🚆 Getting around Entebbe
Entebbe International Airport (EBB)
Uganda's main airport sits right in town. Many hotels offer airport pickup, so you can be checked in within minutes of landing.
Matatu (14-seat minibus)
The main public transport, running between Entebbe and Kampala all day. Fares are very cheap (a few thousand UGX) but with frequent stops; expect 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic.
Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi)
Fast and everywhere, great for short hops and beating traffic, but riskier on highways. Agree the fare before you ride and insist on a helmet.
Pineapple Express shuttle
A scheduled airport-to-Kampala shuttle running several times daily for around 42,000 UGX (~$12), taking about 1.5 hours. Safer and comfier than improvising.
Cash (UGX) + the expressway
The Ugandan shilling rules; taxis and bodas prefer cash. The Entebbe Expressway speeds up the run to Kampala (toll around 5,000 UGX for a sedan).

Should I stay in Entebbe or Kampala?+
If you've just landed or have an early flight, Entebbe is far more convenient: it's right by the airport, calm, safe, and full of nature attractions. Kampala makes sense if you have business in the capital, but it's busier and notorious for traffic. Many travellers stay in Entebbe for their first and last nights.
How long does it take to get from the airport to Kampala?+
It's roughly 35-40 km. Via the Entebbe Expressway you can reach Munyonyo in under 30 minutes, but in rush-hour traffic the trip can stretch to 2 hours. Allow extra time and avoid late Friday afternoons.
How many days do I need in Entebbe?+
One to two days is plenty for the in-town sights like the Botanical Gardens, the wildlife centre and a beach. If you want to add a shoebill boat trip at Mabamba Swamp or visit the Ngamba chimp island, budget a full extra day, as both need an early start and travel by boat.
