🚆 Getting around Jinja
From Entebbe Airport (EBB)
Uganda's main international airport is about 130km from Jinja, a 2.5-4 hour drive depending on traffic. Most travellers pre-book a private transfer or use an Entebbe-Kampala-Jinja shuttle.
Boda Boda
Motorcycle taxis are the fastest way around town, ideal for short hops from the centre to the riverfront. Fares run roughly 3,000-5,000 UGX — always agree the price before you hop on.
Matatu
Shared minivan taxis used by locals for trips around town and to Kampala. Cheap, and they leave when full — great for backpackers wanting the authentic local experience.
Hired car + driver / tours
For Itanda Falls (27km) or Mabira Forest, a car with driver or a tour package is easiest. Adventure operators usually bundle transfers into their packages.
Cash & currency
The Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is used everywhere. ATMs and exchange offices are in town; carry cash for bodas, the market and small shops, though most adventure activities take USD or card.

When is the best time to visit Jinja?+
The dry seasons — December to February and June to September — bring clear skies and less rain, ideal for rafting and outdoor activities. That said, rafting runs year-round because the Nile's flow is kept steady by the dam.
Is rafting the Nile dangerous? Do I need to swim?+
Major outfitters like Nile River Explorers and Adrift provide professional guides, life jackets and helmets. There are gentle family trips and full-on Grade 5 runs, so even non-swimmers can join an appropriate trip.
How do I get from Kampala to Jinja?+
It's about 80km and a 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic. Options include a private transfer, a shuttle service, or a matatu (shared minivan) from a Kampala taxi park — the cheapest but slowest choice.
