Where to stay in Atauro — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Ataúro is a small island in the Wetar Strait, about 25 km north of Dili, and one of Timor-Leste's best-kept secrets. A 2016 Conservation International survey found the waters around it hold the most diverse reef-fish life on the planet — up to 315 species recorded at a single site. This is not a polished Maldives-style resort island; it's raw, honest, and low-key, where most accommodation is a thatched eco-lodge right on the beach and you can snorkel straight off the sand. Pick your base by style: divers and the more social crowd should stay at Beloi, home to the island's main jetty, the lively Saturday market, and a PADI dive centre. Want true off-grid quiet? Head for Barry's Place or remote Adara on the west coast, reachable only by boat or trail. For culture and craft, Vila Maumeta — the tiny capital — has the Boneca de Atauro doll cooperative and tais-weaving workshops. A few tips: beds are very limited, so always book ahead; come in the dry season (May–Nov, July–Aug best); time a Sept–Nov visit for the blue-whale migration; and bring enough US dollars in cash, because there are no ATMs on the island.
Why stay in Atauro

Real culture & craft
The Boneca de Atauro women's cooperative makes handmade dolls and supports over 60 families, alongside tais weaving, wood carving, and the bustling Saturday market at Beloi.

🚆 Getting around Atauro
Berlin Nakroma ferry
The cheap government ferry (~$4) runs Dili–Beloi on Wed/Sat/Sun, leaving Dili port at 8am and Beloi at 3pm; the crossing takes about 3 hours.
Dragon Star fast boat
A fast crossing in about 1 hour (~$13), weekends only, departing Dili at 8am. Buy tickets at the office opposite Dili port, near Gloria Jeans.
Laju Laju boat
The cheapest option (~$3 one way), running on Thursdays — but unreliable, so always confirm, as island boat schedules change often.
On foot + local pickups
There's almost no public transport on the island; walk the forest trails between villages or hire a local pickup or motorbike — your lodge can arrange it.
Bring US dollars in cash
Timor-Leste uses the US dollar. Ataúro has no ATMs and cards are rarely accepted, so withdraw enough cash in Dili before you go.

How do I get to Ataúro?+
By boat from Dili port: the government Berlin Nakroma ferry (~$4, Wed/Sat/Sun, ~3 hrs) or the Dragon Star fast boat (~$13, weekends, ~1 hr), both leaving Dili at 8am. Schedules change frequently, so check ahead and book your accommodation before you go.
When is the best time to visit?+
The dry season, May–November, is best for clear skies, clear water, diving and hiking (July–August is ideal). For the whale migration, come September–November. December–April is the wet season, when trails get slippery and boats may not run.
Are there ATMs or internet on the island?+
No. There are no ATMs and most places take only US-dollar cash, so bring enough from Dili. Mobile and internet coverage is limited, and some eco-lodges (like Barry's Place) have no internet at all — perfect if you want to switch off.
