Where to stay in Baucau — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
If Dili is the busy capital, Baucau is where you finally slow down. Timor-Leste's second-largest city sits on a plateau above the sea, where a whitewashed Portuguese old town (Kota Lama) tumbles downhill toward the coast under giant banyan trees and palms. The colonial atmosphere is still very much alive. Two things keep travellers coming back: the spring-fed Piscina de Baucau, a year-round natural pool, and the white-sand beaches around Osolata and Watabo'o just a few kilometres below town. This is a place for slow travel — sip a cup of Timorese coffee on an old veranda and let the afternoon drift by.
Why stay in Baucau
An old town frozen in time
Kota Lama is full of Portuguese government buildings, tile-roofed houses and a 1932 market. Some are abandoned and faintly eerie — wandering here feels like stepping back decades.
A natural spring pool
Piscina de Baucau is a public pool fed by an underground spring year-round, set in a leafy garden with tennis courts. Entry is just 50 cents.
Quiet white-sand beaches
Just below the plateau lie Osolata and Watabo'o — clear-water, white-sand coves with barely a tourist in sight. Easy to lose a whole day here.
Slow, honest, unpolished
No luxury resorts, no nightlife — just quiet streets, friendly locals and sea views that make you want to stay one more day.

🚆 Getting around Baucau
Microlet / bus from Dili
Vans and buses leave Becora market in eastern Dili several times daily, taking about 3 hours for around US$4. They depart once nearly full.
Drive the north coast
It's about 123 km and 3-4 hours along a scenic coastal road. You can rent a car in Dili (Rentlo, Thrifty) and arrange drop-off in Baucau.
Cakung Airport (BCH)
About 6 km from town, with the country's longest runway. It was the main airport before 1975; commercial flights are limited today, so most visitors arrive by road.
Getting around town
Taxis cost around US$1 a ride in town, or flag down a microlet (converted van) for short hops. The old town and new town are an easy walk apart.
US dollars
Timor-Leste uses the US dollar (USD) as its official currency. Bring small notes and coins — ATMs are scarce outside Dili and most places take cash only.

How do I get from Dili to Baucau, and how long does it take?+
Take a microlet or bus from Becora market in Dili — about 3 hours for roughly US$4. Alternatively, rent a car or motorbike and drive the scenic north coast (around 123 km, 3-4 hours). The views are beautiful the whole way.
Is the Piscina de Baucau pool open every day?+
No — it usually closes on Mondays and Thursdays, when the pool is drained for cleaning. It's open other days for about 50 cents entry. Go in the morning or late afternoon for the most comfortable time.
Are Baucau's beaches safe for swimming?+
Watabo'o and the Osolata coast are beautiful with clear water, but be cautious of saltwater crocodiles, especially near river mouths and at dusk. Always ask locals before entering the water and avoid swimming far from shore alone.
