Where to stay in Khujand — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Most travelers picture Dushanbe or the Pamir Mountains when they think of Tajikistan, but Khujand, the country's second-largest city on the Syr Darya river, might just be its most charming and accessible. This is one of Central Asia's oldest cities, founded around 2,500 years ago and renamed Alexandria Eschate ("Alexandria the Furthest") by Alexander the Great in 329 BC, a key Silk Road outpost guarding the mouth of the Fergana Valley. The star attraction is the Panjshanbe Bazaar, the largest covered market in Central Asia, fronted by a flamboyant pink facade and facing the ancient Sheikh Muslihiddin mausoleum. Add a riverside fortress, a cable car gliding over the Syr Darya, and a "Tajik Sea" for summer days, and you have a city that rewards slow exploration. This guide pulls together the real places to stay, see, and eat in Khujand.
