Where to stay in Khorog — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Khorog is the capital of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) — a small mountain town tucked into the floor of a deep canyon at around 2,200 metres above sea level, where the Gunt River meets the mighty Panj that marks the border with Afghanistan. It's the gateway to the legendary Pamir Highway, a rite of passage for overland adventurers, and home to the Pamir Botanical Garden, one of the highest in the world. Most locals are Pamiri people of the Ismaili Muslim faith, known for genuinely warm hospitality. If you're after stillness in the high mountains, far from the tourist crowds, Khorog delivers.
Why stay in Khorog
Start of the Pamir Highway
Khorog is the main staging post before tackling the legendary M41 toward Murghab, Kyrgyzstan, or the Wakhan Valley. Refuel, resupply and rest here before heading onto the roof of the world.
A garden on the mountaintop
The Pamir Botanical Garden, founded in 1940 at roughly 2,320m, is one of the highest in the world. Its sweeping views over the town and the Gunt River alone are worth the trip — and entry is free.
Famously warm Pamiri hosts
The Ismaili Pamiri community is renowned for hospitality. Homestays and family-run guesthouses offer a close, authentic window into local mountain culture you won't find elsewhere.
Raw, untamed scenery
Deep canyons, turquoise rivers, natural hot springs and views across to Afghanistan's Hindu Kush — all of it still wild and refreshingly free of crowds.

🚆 Getting around Khorog
Flight from Dushanbe
Tajik Air resumed the Dushanbe-Khorog route in late 2024, flying an AN-28 three times a week with a flight time of about 1 hour 10 minutes. The Pamir views from the air are unmatched, but flights are weather-dependent and frequently cancelled.
Shared taxi from Dushanbe
How most travellers arrive: a shared taxi from Dushanbe takes 14-20 hours and costs roughly 300-350 TJS. The road is well paved to Kalaikhum, then 242 km of rough surface to Khorog — expect delays from ongoing 2026 roadworks.
Getting around by marshrutka
The town stretches just 5-6 km, served by local minivans (marshrutkas) and taxis, though you can walk to almost everything. For the Botanical Garden just outside town, grab a marshrutka or hire a taxi.
GBAO permit is mandatory
Every foreign traveller needs a GBAO permit to enter the Pamir region, including Khorog. Apply at an OVIR office in Dushanbe, Khujand, Khorog or Murghab — easiest to arrange alongside your visa or before you set off.
Carry enough Somoni cash
The currency is the Somoni. Khorog has very few ATMs and they often don't work with foreign cards. Most shops take cash only, so withdraw or exchange enough in Dushanbe before heading up.

See this city's guide →Frequently asked — where to stay in Khorog
Do I need a special permit to visit Khorog?+
Yes. Every foreign traveller needs a GBAO (Gorno-Badakhshan) permit to enter the Pamir region, which includes Khorog. You can apply at an OVIR office in Dushanbe, Khujand, Khorog or Murghab — it's easiest to arrange it alongside your visa or before you set off.
How do I get from Dushanbe to Khorog, and how long does it take?+
Two main options: a Tajik Air flight (AN-28, three times a week, about 1h10m, but frequently cancelled due to weather), or a shared taxi by road taking 14-20 hours for roughly 300-350 TJS. Most travellers take the road as it's more reliable than the flight.
Can I use cards or ATMs in Khorog?+
Barely. Khorog has very few ATMs and they often don't work with foreign cards or are out of service. Most shops and guesthouses take cash only in Somoni, so withdraw or exchange enough cash in Dushanbe before heading up to the Pamirs.
