Where to stay in Dushanbe — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Dushanbe is Tajikistan's leafy, low-key capital, spread along the Varzob River under the foothills of the Hissar Range. Its name literally means Monday, after the weekly Silk Road bazaar that once gave the town its rhythm. The city's signature sight is the 165-metre Dushanbe Flagpole, the tallest in the world from 2011 to 2014, but the real charm is slower: tree-lined Rudaki Avenue, fountain-filled parks, the palace-like Mehrgon market, and a national museum that holds a thousand-year-old reclining Buddha. Cheap, calm and safe, Dushanbe is the perfect base before heading into the Pamir Mountains.
