Slovenia — find the right stay, from deciding to booking

“Lake Bled, Postojna Cave, the dragon city, and a little Venice on the Adriatic”

Slovenia is a hidden gem in the heart of Europe that packs nature, mountains, sea and old towns into one small country — Lake Bled with its island church and clifftop castle, the 20-plus kilometers of Postojna Cave, the World Heritage Škocjan Caves, the capital Ljubljana with its Dragon Bridge and a castle in the middle of town, the Julian Alps crowned by Mount Triglav, and the seaside town of Piran scented with Venice.

🚌

Bus

The bus network covers the whole country; Ljubljana–Bled–Postojna runs direct and convenient.

🚆

Train

Trains link the main cities but are slow and don't reach some sights — best for the Ljubljana corridor.

✈️

Ljubljana Airport

LJU has European flights from many cities, or fly into Vienna or Zagreb and continue by bus or train.

🚲

Cycling & walking in the city

Ljubljana is walkable, with the BicikeLJ public bike share — cheap and convenient.

🛂 Etiquette & culture in Slovenia

🐉

The dragon, symbol of Ljubljana

The dragon appears on the city crest, bridges and emblems all over Ljubljana — legend says Jason and the Argonauts slew a dragon here.

🌿

A nation that loves the environment

Slovenia is one of the most eco-friendly countries in Europe, and Ljubljana has been named a European Green Capital.

🍷

Wine and food culture

Slovenia has quality wine regions in three areas, and each region's cuisine has its own distinct flavor.

☀️

Summer

Jun – Aug

The best weather; Lake Bled is gorgeous, swimming and climbing are on — but it's the crowded peak season.

🌸

Spring

Apr – May

Flowers bloom, the air is fresh, and there are fewer people than summer — great for hiking and scenery.

🍂

Autumn

Sep – Oct

Forests turn color, the weather is pleasant, crowds thin out, and hotel prices are better.

⛷️

Winter

Dec – Mar

Snow blankets the mountains, with skiing at Kranjska Gora and Bohinj and a romantic mood (the caves are open year-round).

FAQ — visiting Slovenia

How many days should I spend in Slovenia?+

5–7 days — 2 days in Ljubljana + 2 days at Bled + 1 day for the Postojna and Škocjan caves + 1–2 days in Piran covers all the main highlights.

Do Thai passport holders need a visa?+

Yes, apply for a Schengen visa in advance — it lets you travel across all 27 Schengen countries. Prepare your documents and travel insurance in full.

How should I get around Slovenia?+

A rental car is the most convenient — the sights are spread out and some bus routes are infrequent, so a car gives you freedom and lets you see more in less time.

Is Slovenia expensive compared to Western Europe?+

Clearly cheaper — food, lodging and admission run about 20–40% less than Austria or Italy, great for budget and comfortable travelers alike.

Tips before you go to Slovenia

  1. A rental car is the easiest way to explore — the routes are scenic and parking isn't hard to find.
  2. Visit Lake Bled early (before 8 a.m.) for the best views with few people around.
  3. Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle are close together — combine them in one day.
  4. Cars are banned in Ljubljana's old town; park and walk, or take the funicular up to the castle.
  5. At Piran, park outside the old town and walk in (the old town is car-free).
  6. A combined ticket for Postojna Cave + Predjama Castle is cheaper than buying them separately.
