Picture a three-storey stone building on the river that was once home to a 17th-century gold merchant, sitting right on the prettiest bend of the Ljubljanica — that's Zlata Ladjica, which means golden boat in Slovenian, after the old restaurant that long occupied the building. Inside, the original stone walls, wooden beams and a winding staircase survive in almost every corner. There are only 15 rooms, and no two are alike because each follows the old floor plan where stone walls pinch the corners. The designers left some stone exposed and the dark beams crossing the ceilings on show, then added clean modern furniture that doesn't fight the building. Beds are king-size with soft grey headboards, the curtains are thick enough to black out the light, and the pale-marble bathrooms have a decent rain shower. The best rooms face the river: open the tall windows and you look straight onto Triple Bridge and the café terraces below.

Food and amenities

The headline here is the homemade breakfast, served plate by plate at a large communal table. It uses local Slovenian ingredients, the bakery is baked in-house each morning, and the eggs are cooked fresh to order — many reviews call it the best breakfast of their European trip, and the reason they want to come back. Tell the kitchen about any allergies in advance and the chef adjusts on the spot. Be honest about what's missing, though: there is no spa, no pool, no gym and no dinner restaurant in the building. Location and getting there

On location, no hedging — Zlata Ladjica sits in the dead centre of Ljubljana. Turn right out the door and in under a 1 minute you're on Triple Bridge, the city's signature three-span crossing designed by the architect Jože Plečnik. Look straight ahead and there's Prešeren Square with the pink Franciscan church, the city's icon photo. Walk up Castle Hill about 8 minutes and you reach Ljubljana Castle — funicular or stone steps, your choice. Plečnik's Central Market across the river is about 3 minutes. For trains to Bled or Zagreb, the central railway station is no more than a 12-minute walk, and Ljubljana airport (LJU) is roughly 30 minutes by car.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide. Because this is a centuries-old historic building, the rooms aren't as roomy as a modern chain's — some have low ceilings following the old beams, and parts of the building have no elevator due to preservation limits. If you have large luggage or find stairs hard, tell the hotel ahead so they can arrange a ground-floor room or help carry your bags. The other thing to understand: no spa, no pool, no gym and no in-house dinner — the idea is to send you out to eat and walk the city. For families with several young children or big groups of friends, note that most rooms are built for two, so request a suite or connecting room in advance. Finally, on price: high-season summer and Christmas fill up fast and rates jump, so book at least 2 to 3 months ahead for the good dates.
