Where to stay in Poprad — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Poprad is the gateway to the High Tatras, the highest range of the Carpathians, set in northern Slovakia at around 672 m above sea level. It is a compact, walkable city of roughly 57,000 people, but its real value is as a transport hub: it has its own airport, a major rail junction, and is the starting point of the TEŽ electric mountain railway that climbs to resorts like Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso in under half an hour. Whether you come to ski in winter, hike in summer, or soak in the thermal pools at AquaCity, this is the most practical base in the region. It also sits close to UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle and has its own preserved medieval quarter, Spišská Sobota, right in town.
Why stay in Poprad
The best base for the High Tatras
Ride the TEŽ electric railway straight from the town centre up to Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso lake in under an hour — far cheaper and more flexible than staying on the mountain itself.
Thermal pools after the trail
AquaCity Poprad has 13-plus geothermal and swimming pools, saunas and a spa, fed by genuine underground springs and open into the evening — the perfect way to ease tired legs after a day in the mountains.
Medieval town plus a World Heritage site
The preserved medieval quarter of Spišská Sobota is part of Poprad itself, while UNESCO-listed Spiš Castle and the historic town of Kežmarok are both under 40 km away — easy day trips.

Should I stay in Poprad town or up in the mountains?+
If you don't have a car and want convenience, stay in central Poprad near the station and ride the TEŽ railway up as day trips — it's cheaper and has far more dining choices. If you plan to ski or hike every day, basing yourself in Starý Smokovec or Štrbské Pleso puts you in the mountains the moment you step outside.
When is the best time to visit Poprad?+
Summer (June–September) is ideal for hiking the High Tatras, with temperatures around 20–25°C. Winter (December–March) is ski season, with deep snow and sub-zero temperatures. For quieter trails and autumn colour with fewer crowds, try the shoulder season in autumn.
How do I get from Poprad up into the High Tatras?+
It's easy — take the TEŽ electric mountain railway directly from Poprad-Tatry station. Starý Smokovec is about 25 minutes away, with onward connections to Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica. Single tickets are a few euros, or buy a day pass if you're hopping between several spots.
