Where to stay in Bratislava — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is one of Europe's most underrated capitals — and the kind of place that wins you over the moment you start walking. The Old Town is compact enough to cover in a single day, crowned by a white castle perched on a hill above the Danube, with the odd flying-saucer bridge below and quirky bronze statues tucked into street corners. Its best trick: it sits just 50 km from Vienna — an hour by train, bus, or even fast catamaran — so it works equally well as a destination of its own or a day trip. And it's noticeably cheaper than its Western European neighbours, from hotels to local beer and wine.
Why stay in Bratislava
A castle over the river
The white, four-towered Bratislava Castle stands about 80 m above the Danube and is the city's symbol. Walk up to its terraces for a sweeping view over the rooftops, the SNP bridge, and across to Austria.
An Old Town you finish in a day
Staré Mesto is tiny and walkable — cobbled lanes, the Main Square, the cheeky Čumil statue popping out of a manhole, and St Michael's Gate are all within a few minutes of each other.
Vienna and Budapest at the door
It's only about 50 km to Vienna — an hour by train or bus, or a scenic ride on the Twin City Liner catamaran down the Danube. Perfect as a day trip or a stop between bigger cities.
Better value than its neighbours
Hotels, restaurants, beer, and local wine all run noticeably cheaper than Vienna or Western Europe. The same budget stretches a lot further — a win for backpackers and value travellers alike.

How many days do you need in Bratislava?+
The Old Town is so compact that one full day covers the main sights — castle, Main Square, Blue Church, UFO bridge. Add Devín Castle or the Modra/Pezinok wine route and you'll want two. It also works perfectly as a day trip from Vienna.
How do I get to Vienna from Bratislava?+
Several easy options: trains from Hlavná stanica take about an hour from a few euros, FlixBus/RegioJet coaches are cheap and frequent, or the Twin City Liner catamaran cruises the Danube in about 75 minutes (from ~€25) for the most scenic trip.
Which area should I stay in?+
First-timers should pick Staré Mesto (Old Town) — everything is walkable and it has the best restaurants and bars, though it's the priciest. For value, cross the river to Petržalka; for families or longer stays, leafy, airport-adjacent Ružinov is a good bet.
