Where to stay in Musanze — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Musanze — formerly Ruhengeri — is Rwanda's third-largest city and the undisputed gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home of the endangered mountain gorilla. Sitting at around 1,849m in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes, this tidy, cool-climate town is where almost every gorilla traveller bases themselves. Use it to launch gorilla treks, golden monkey tracking, volcano hikes to crater lakes, and visits to the Musanze lava caves. Clean streets, friendly people, and big mountain views — Musanze punches well above its size.
Why stay in Musanze
Meet mountain gorillas
Volcanoes National Park has 10 habituated gorilla families open to visitors — one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on Earth, capped at just 96 permits a day to protect the animals.
Volcanoes on every horizon
The town sits beneath the Virunga chain, from Mount Bisoke with its summit crater lake to Karisimbi at 4,507m — a paradise for hikers and crater-lake chasers.
Golden monkeys, easier and cheaper
Golden monkeys live on the lower bamboo slopes, so they're far easier to find than gorillas — and a permit is only $100, perfect for tighter budgets or shorter trips.
Safe, calm and welcoming

🚆 Getting around Musanze
Fly into Kigali (KGL), then drive
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the main gateway. From there it's roughly 105-115km to Musanze, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road on good, paved highway.
Bus from Kigali (Nyabugogo)
Coaches leave Kigali's Nyabugogo station roughly every half hour for around 3,000 francs, taking about 2 hours. Reliable operators include Virunga Express, Volcano Express, Ritco and Kigali Bus Service.
Moto-taxis
The go-to way to get around town. Drivers carry a spare helmet for you; a typical cross-town ride runs about 300-400 francs and fares are negotiable. Fast and cheap.
4WD with driver / transfers
For gorilla trekking, a 4WD with driver is recommended — the access roads to the trailheads are rough dirt tracks. Private transfers from Kigali are widely available.
Cash: Rwandan Franc (RWF)
The currency is the Rwandan Franc. In a smaller town like Musanze, bus fares, moto-taxis and small purchases run mostly on cash, so keep francs on hand even though Kigali is card-friendly.

How much is a gorilla permit in Musanze, and how do I book?+
Permits cost $1,500 per person, a flat rate fixed since 2017, with only 96 issued each day to protect the gorillas. Book ahead through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or a registered tour operator — ideally several months in advance during high season.
What's the best way to get from Kigali to Musanze?+
On a budget, take a coach from Kigali's Nyabugogo station (~3,000 francs, ~2 hours) with operators like Virunga Express or Volcano Express. For convenience — especially before an early-morning gorilla trek — a private transfer or hired car with driver is the easier choice.
Which area should I stay in?+
If you're trekking gorillas and your budget allows, stay in Kinigi, closest to the park HQ so you don't have to rush at dawn. For budget stays near restaurants and banks, base yourself in Musanze town centre. For a community, cultural vibe, try Nyakinama (Red Rocks).
