Where to stay in Gisenyi — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Gisenyi, officially Rubavu, is Rwanda's easygoing resort town on the shore of Lake Kivu, right where the country meets Goma in the DRC. The draw is simple: some of the cleanest freshwater beaches in East Africa, swimmable with no crocodiles, no hippos and no bilharzia, framed by the Virunga volcanoes. On a clear night you can spot the red glow of Nyiragongo's lava lake on the horizon. The vibe is slow and lakeside, but lively with markets, cafes and busy border-town energy, making it the perfect place to unwind after gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park.
Why stay in Gisenyi
Beaches you can actually swim
Lake Kivu is free of crocodiles, hippos and bilharzia, so swimming is genuinely safe. The public beach and Paradis Malahide offer pale sand, clear water and rows of palm trees.
Rare volcano views
You're a stone's throw from Mount Nyiragongo across the border, home to the world's largest lava lake. On clear nights its red glow lights up the horizon over the lake.
A genuinely slow pace
Stroll the tree-lined Avenue de la Coopération in the cool lake breeze. It's an ideal recovery stop after the early starts of gorilla trekking nearby.
Water activities on tap
Sunset boat cruises, kayaking, night fishing with local cooperatives, trips to Napoleon (Bat) Island, and the start of the 200km+ Congo-Nile Trail.
