Where to stay in Kigali — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Kigali is the capital of Rwanda and widely regarded as the cleanest and safest city in Africa — spotless streets, zero plastic bags (Rwanda banned them back in 2008), and a calm you can feel walking around even after dark. Built across rolling green hills, the city has reinvented itself in the decades since the 1994 genocide. The heart of any visit is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a moving, unforgettable experience, paired with bustling markets, world-class Rwandan coffee, a lively contemporary art scene, and some of the warmest people you'll meet anywhere. If you're heading north to trek the mountain gorillas, Kigali is the gateway — give it at least a day or two.
Why stay in Kigali

🚆 Getting around Kigali
Kigali International Airport (KGL)
In Kanombe, about 10 km from the center. Official taxis run 24/7 with fixed rates (around 10,000 RWF downtown), or take the KBS shuttle to the Union Trade Center for 1,000 RWF.
Motos (motorbike taxis)
The quickest, most popular way around town — roughly 500–1,500 RWF a ride, helmet included. Book via the Yego Moto app for fixed fares and GPS tracking, safer than flagging one down.
City buses + Tap&Go card
Buses are cashless — you'll need a Tap&Go card to tap on. Buy and top up at terminals, agents, or via mobile money and the Tap&Go app. Extremely cheap.
Move (VW) ride-hailing
Book through the Move app on Android or iOS; fares are calculated automatically by distance, starting at 600 RWF for the first km and around 750 RWF per km after. Convenient and transparent.
Cash + mobile money
The currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF), roughly 1,486 to the US dollar. Carry some cash, but Mobile Money (MTN/Airtel) is accepted almost everywhere. Never bring plastic bags into the country.
