“The clear coral of Roatán, the Maya ruins of Copán, and Central American rainforest”

Honduras is a hidden gem of Central America — Roatán in the Bay Islands is a diving spot on the world's second-largest coral reef, the Maya ruins of Copán are full of the finest stone carvings in Maya civilization, Pico Bonito National Park hides dense rainforest, and the capital, Tegucigalpa, sits on a mountain with a Spanish-heritage old town — a country still pristine and waiting to be discovered.

Do Thai travelers need a visa?+

Check the latest visa conditions with the embassy before you travel, as the requirements can change.

The lempira (HNL) is the main currency. Roatán takes US dollars at some places, but changing to lempiras is recommended for general use and a better rate.

Tips before you go to Honduras

  1. Roatán is the cheapest and best diving spot in the Caribbean — book your dive course ahead.
  2. Utila is much cheaper than Roatán, ideal for budget travelers who want to dive.
  3. At Copán, go early before 9 am to avoid the afternoon sun and crowds.
  4. Bottled water everywhere — avoid tap water directly.
  5. Power plug Type A/B 120V — Thai 220V devices need a transformer.
  6. Storm season is Sep–Oct — avoid it, or buy travel insurance that covers storms.
