Where to stay in Copan Ruinas — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Copán Ruinas is a small, charming hill town in western Honduras, just a stone's throw from the Guatemalan border, and home to one of the best-preserved Maya cities in the world. Its star feature is the Hieroglyphic Stairway, a 63-step staircase carved with more than 2,000 glyphs, the longest single Maya inscription ever found, alongside intricately sculpted stelae that read almost like 3D portraits and flocks of scarlet macaws (Honduras's national bird) wheeling over the ruins. The town itself is a delight, all cobblestone streets, a leafy central plaza with a white church and easygoing cafes, and some of the friendliest locals in Central America. The archaeological site is a flat 15-minute walk from the main square.
Why stay in Copan Ruinas

Wild scarlet macaws overhead
Flocks of brilliant red macaws, Honduras's national bird, have been rescued, bred and released here. Watching them swoop over the plazas is a sight you won't find at other Maya sites.

How much is entry to the Copán ruins and how long should I plan?+
Entry to the main site (including the Sculpture Museum and Las Sepulturas) is around US$15, with extra fees if you want to enter the excavation tunnels. Allow 2-4 hours for the main site, or a full day if you'll also do the museum and Las Sepulturas. Hiring a local guide at the entrance is well worth it for the history.
How do I get to Copán from Guatemala or San Pedro Sula?+
From San Pedro Sula (SAP airport), take a Hedman Alas/Casasola bus or a shuttle, about 4 hours. From Guatemala (e.g. Antigua or Guatemala City), cross-border shuttles run via El Florido, only about 12 km from Copán, which makes it an easy add-on to a Guatemala trip.
When is the best time to visit Copán?+
The dry season from November to April is best, especially February to April for sunny weather and minimal rain. May to October is wetter but leaves the jungle lush and green and brings fewer tourists. Temperatures stay around 18-28°C year-round.
