Where to stay in Roatan — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, sitting in the Caribbean about 65 km off the country's northern coast. The headline draw is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest reef system on Earth after Australia's Great Barrier Reef — which wraps right around the island, so you can snorkel coral and swim with sea turtles straight off the beach. The island is long and narrow (roughly 53 km by 7 km), fringed by powder-white sand and turquoise water at its showpiece, West Bay Beach. Life here runs on island time, prices are gentler than most Caribbean islands, and because Roatán was once a British colony, locals speak both Spanish and English — making it refreshingly easy to get around.
Why stay in Roatan
World-class, affordable diving
Roatán is one of the cheapest places on the planet to learn scuba. The reef begins just metres from shore, with reliable sightings of tropical fish, sea turtles and rays — and whale sharks pass by in certain months.
Postcard beaches
West Bay Beach is regularly called one of the Caribbean's finest: soft white sand, calm clear water, and a coral reef close enough to snorkel right from the shoreline.
Better value than most islands
Hotels, food and tours run cheaper here than at many marquee Caribbean destinations, and US dollars are accepted everywhere, so you can travel comfortably without ever changing money.
English is widely spoken
Thanks to its British colonial past, many locals speak English alongside Spanish. Add the distinctive Garifuna culture and Roatán is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to navigate as a visitor.

🚆 Getting around Roatan
RTB airport, central
Juan Manuel Gálvez International (RTB) sits near Coxen Hole, with direct US flights and connections via San Pedro Sula on the mainland. It's about 20-25 minutes to West Bay or West End.
Private vs shared taxis
There are two kinds of taxi — private (pricier) and shared (cheaper, with multiple pickups). A ride from the airport to West Bay/West End runs roughly $25-40. There's no Uber, so agree the fare before you get in.
Resort shuttles
Many resorts offer airport pickup (free or paid) that you can book ahead — a driver waits at arrivals with your name. The easiest option for families with luggage.
Water taxis at West End
Water taxis run between West End and West Bay, a fun way to skip the coastal road and hop between the two main hubs by boat.
US dollars work islandwide
The official currency is the lempira (L), around 26-27 L to the dollar, but US dollars are accepted everywhere. Carry small bills for taxis and small shops; ATMs are in the main towns.

When is the best time to visit Roatán?+
The dry season (roughly February to April) brings clear skies and great visibility — the best diving conditions. Late in the year (September to November) is the rainy, storm-prone season. For the best chance of swimming with whale sharks, aim for February to April.
Should I stay in West Bay or West End?+
Choose West Bay for the best beach, calm clear water and upscale resorts — ideal for couples and families. Pick West End if you're diving, backpacking, or want a livelier strip of restaurants and bars. The two are only 10-15 minutes apart, so it's easy to visit both.
Do I need to exchange money before arriving?+
No. US dollars are accepted across the island and change is given in lempira. Bring small bills ($1, $5, $20) for taxis and small vendors; ATMs and credit cards work in the main towns and larger resorts.
