Where to stay in Crete — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Crete is the largest island in Greece, stretching over 260 km from west to east, and it packs almost everything into one place. You get the legendary pink sand of Elafonissi, the 4,000-year-old Minoan Palace of Knossos, the longest gorge in Europe at Samaria, and Venetian old towns that look straight off a postcard. For travelers who want Greece without the Santorini crush, Crete is bigger, better value, and far more varied — sea, mountains, food, and deep history all in a single trip.
Why stay in Crete

From the pink sand of Elafonissi to the turquoise Balos lagoon and quiet coves on the south coast — pick your mood without repeating yourself.

🚆 Getting around Crete
Two island airports
Heraklion (HER) is the larger main airport; Chania (CHQ) serves the west. Fly into whichever is closer to your base — both get direct European flights in summer.
KTEL buses
Intercity buses are clean, air-conditioned, and punctual, linking Chania–Rethymno–Heraklion along the north coast. Fares are cheap, e.g. Heraklion–Chania around €15, Heraklion–Rethymno around €8.
Car rental
The most popular option for reaching remote beaches and mountain villages. Pick up at either airport or in town; main roads are good, though some beach approaches are winding.
Ferry from Athens
Heraklion is the largest port, connected to Piraeus (Athens) and the Cyclades. Overnight ferries take around 8–9 hours, leaving in the evening and arriving early morning.
Cash & cards
Currency is the euro (EUR). Cards work widely in towns and larger venues, but carry cash for small village tavernas and markets.

Which town should I stay in on Crete?+
For a first visit, Chania is the easiest pick thanks to its beautiful old town and atmosphere. Choose Heraklion if Knossos and history are your priority, and Rethymno for a calmer, better-value base that suits families. The island is huge, so match your base to what you most want to see.
When is the best time to visit Crete?+
May through September offers warm weather and good swimming, with late May, June, and September the sweet spot for sun without peak crowds. July and August are hottest and busiest. For hiking and sightseeing, aim for April–May or September–October.
Do I need to rent a car in Crete?+
Not necessarily — KTEL buses link the main north-coast towns well if you stay in a city. But to reach standout beaches like Elafonissi or Balos and the mountain villages, a rental car is far more convenient and flexible.
