Where to stay in Athens — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Athens is a city where you genuinely walk through 2,500 years of history. Look up almost anywhere and the Acropolis crowns the rocky hill at the center of town; come back down and you are in Plaka, the old quarter laced with pedestrian lanes, tavernas and cafes. The magic of Athens is how it blends the ancient with a relaxed Mediterranean buzz. The historic center is small and walkable, and stays run from backpacker hostels to luxury rooftops with a Parthenon view.

🚆 Getting around Athens

✈️

Airport to city

From Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH): Metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma in about 40 minutes on a special €9 ticket, or the X95 bus runs direct to Syntagma 24/7, every 15–20 minutes, for about €6.

🚇

Three-line metro

The Athens metro has three lines (red/blue/green) covering nearly all the main sights. Monastiraki, Syntagma and Acropolis stations are the most useful for visitors.

🚶

Walk most of it

The old center of Plaka, Monastiraki and Syntagma is all within walking distance, much of it pedestrianized. Stay central and you barely need transport.

🎫

Tourist ticket

A 3-day tourist ticket (€22) covers all city public transport plus one return airport trip by bus or metro. Worth it for a multi-day stay.

🚢

Ferries to the islands

Piraeus port is the hub for ferries to Greek islands like Santorini and Mykonos. Metro Line 1 runs straight from the center to the port.

Where to go next near Athens

Frequently asked — where to stay in Athens

Which neighborhood should I stay in?+

For a first visit, stay in the old center: Plaka (classic and pretty), Monastiraki (lively, best transport with a two-line metro), Syntagma (upscale, near the airport bus) or Koukaki (local, quieter, best value). All are within walking distance of the Acropolis.

How many days do I need in Athens?+

Two to three days suits the city itself. Day one for the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, day two for Plaka, the Ancient Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the National Archaeological Museum. A third day leaves room for Lycabettus or a day trip to Cape Sounion.

Is it hard to get around Athens?+

Not at all. The old center is walkable and largely pedestrian, the three-line metro covers the main sights and the airport link is easy, with English signage throughout. Just watch your bag in crowds like the Monastiraki flea market.
