The Strand Yangon — hotel No. 1 #1 riverside legend hotel 9.2

The Strand Yangon

From ~$357

📍 On Strand Road in the heart of Downtown, in the Pansodan quarter — a 3-minute walk to the Pansodan jetty, about 10 minutes by car to Yangon Central railway station, and roughly 45 minutes to Yangon Airport (RGN).

🏛️ Colonial building from 1901 🛎️ 24-hour private butler 🍸 Sarkies Bar, a city legend
1901 legend31-suite boutiqueYangon riverside24-hour butler

The Strand Yangon is one of the oldest and most storied hotels in Southeast Asia, first opened in 1901 by the Armenian Sarkies brothers — the same family behind Raffles in Singapore and the E&O in Penang. It sits on Strand Road along the Yangon River, in the heart of Downtown near the Pansodan quarter. The building lived through British colonial rule, the Second World War and decades of change, then a major restoration in 2016 that kept the old British feel intact — gleaming teak floors, slow-turning brass ceiling fans, rattan chairs and tall ceilings. There are only 31 suites, and every one comes with a 24-hour private butler who learns your name and your tastes. The headline draw is Sarkies Bar, where writers like Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham once drank, pouring the hotel's signature Strand Sour. With a 9.2/10 score, it suits couples, honeymooners and anyone who loves real history over a brand-new chain.

  • A 124-year-old legend on the river in the city center
  • True boutique with only 31 suites and a one-on-one 24-hour butler
  • Sarkies Bar and the legendary Strand Sour
  • Highest prices in Yangon, and rooms smaller than newer chains
  • Downtown is quiet at night with little nightlife

🏛️ 1920s teak mansion 🌴 Tropical garden + shaded pool 🛕 8-minute drive to Shwedagon
1920s teak mansionquiet embassy quartershaded tropical poolnear Shwedagon Pagoda

Belmond Governor's Residence is a two-storey 1920s teak mansion that once housed the British-era Governor of Shan State. It sits in Bahan — the Embassy Quarter, the quietest pocket of Yangon, ringed by embassies and tree-lined streets. The main building is a dark-brown colonial teak house wrapped in long wooden verandahs, with 49 rooms and suites spread across the main house and wing buildings. Most rooms have a wooden balcony looking onto the tropical garden or the pool under big shade trees. The highlight is a candlelit poolside dinner of Burmese and Asian food that many reviews call one of their most memorable meals. It is about an 8-minute drive to Shwedagon Pagoda, roughly 20 minutes to Sule Pagoda downtown, and 30 to 40 minutes from Yangon airport. Overall 9.3/10 — best for couples and luxury travelers who value atmosphere and history over modern polish.

  • Genuine 1920s teak mansion with real colonial atmosphere
  • Lovely tropical garden with a pool under big shade trees
  • Only an 8-minute drive to Shwedagon Pagoda
  • Some rooms are older and smaller than a contemporary 5-star standard
  • No real gym and no full-size spa

Pan Pacific Yangon is a 23-storey glass tower on the corner of Bogyoke Aung San Road and Shwedagon Pagoda Road, right in the middle of downtown. It opened in 2017 under Singapore's Pan Pacific Hotels Group and has 336 rooms and suites, most of them from the 13th floor up, with floor-to-ceiling glass that in some rooms frames both Shwedagon and Sule Pagoda in one view. The headline draw is the 23rd-floor infinity pool with a 180-degree city panorama, backed by a 24-hour gym, the brand's St. Gregory spa, and a breakfast buffet at The Pacific that reviewers rate among the best in Yangon. Step out the side door and you are at Bogyoke Aung San (Scott) Market in 2 minutes; Yangon Central railway station is an 8-10 minute walk. From the airport it is a 45-60 minute drive. Sule Shangri-La Yangon — hotel No. 4 #4 big-chain 5-star · center of Downtown 9

📍 Center of Downtown on Sule Pagoda Road — directly across from Bogyoke Aung San Market, just 2 blocks from Sule Pagoda, with Yangon Central railway station close by and the airport a 45-to-60-minute drive depending on traffic.

🏙️ Directly across from Bogyoke Aung San Market 🥟 Summer Palace — well-known Cantonese dim sum 🏊 Outdoor pool plus Chi Spa
across from Bogyoke Market2 blocks to Sule PagodaSummer Palace dim sumShangri-La service

Sule Shangri-La Yangon is one of a handful of major-chain 5-stars that has held the center of the city since 1996, when it opened as the Traders Hotel. The 22-storey tower holds roughly 478 rooms and suites on Sule Pagoda Road, directly across from Bogyoke Aung San Market — the souvenir-and-antiques market every Yangon visitor ends up at — and just 2 blocks from Sule Pagoda, the gold landmark in the middle of the roundabout. The draw is Shangri-La chain service, still hard to match anywhere in Myanmar: warm, classic rooms with old-town or Shwedagon Pagoda views, a leafy 5th-floor outdoor pool with a Chi Spa, and the Summer Palace dining room serving Cantonese dim sum good enough that locals line up for it. The trade-off is a building that is starting to show its age, with parts due for a refresh. Rooms open from about $100 a night. Overall 9.0/10 — a fit for couples, business travelers, and families who want a convenient 5-star in the heart of town.

  • Center of Downtown on Sule Pagoda Road, directly across from Bogyoke Aung San Market
  • Shangri-La chain service that's hard to find anywhere in Myanmar
  • Summer Palace Cantonese dim sum, rated one of the city's best Chinese kitchens
  • Aging building, open since 1996 — some rooms and corridors are due for a refresh
  • Drink and premium Wi-Fi prices run high against local Yangon rates

🛕 Rooms framing the golden Shwedagon stupa 🏞️ Right on Kandawgyi Natural Park 🍳 Breakfast buffet rated among Yangon's best

Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon is a 5-star, roughly 300-room property run by Bangkok's Chatrium group, sitting in the Bahan district right beside Kandawgyi Natural Park — the lake known for its golden hintha-bird royal barge. The thing every review repeats is the view from the rooms: many open onto the gilded Shwedagon Pagoda standing dead center, with the lake reflecting light below it. It's a 5-minute drive to Myanmar's most sacred pagoda and about 30 minutes from Yangon airport (RGN). The other draw is the breakfast buffet, rated one of the best in Yangon, with Thai, Burmese and Western dishes plus a made-to-order egg station. The Thai-chain service makes Thai guests feel like they're staying at a Thai hotel abroad. Rates start around $54 a night — strong value for a 5-star with a Shwedagon view.

  • Shwedagon Pagoda and Kandawgyi Lake in a single window frame
  • Breakfast buffet praised near-unanimously across reviews
  • Bangkok's Chatrium chain — service that understands Thai guests
  • Building and some rooms are starting to show their age
  • Wi-Fi is patchy in spots, especially on high floors

🏛️ 1920s Steel Brothers Building 🍸 Colonial-style Newsroom bar 🛏️ 74 rooms, 4m ceilings
1920s heritage buildingHirsch Bedner designNewsroom colonial barcentral Pansodan quarter

Picture a 1920s British teak-trading office standing in the Pansodan Heritage Zone in downtown Yangon, then imagine it carefully reworked by the Hirsch Bedner team out of Bangkok into a 74-room 5-star boutique. That is Yangon Excelsior, formerly the Steel Brothers Building, which keeps its old brick shell, wrought-iron balconies and ceilings about 4 metres high, then adds Burmese teak, marble and Art Deco lamps to suit the era. The detail reviewers keep naming is The Newsroom, the colonial-style bar off the lobby, plus a kitchen serving contemporary Burmese food. It is a 6-minute walk to Sule Pagoda and 5 minutes to the Pansodan jetty, with rates from about $80 a night — strong value for a heritage 5-star in the old capital. The 9.1/10 score suits couples, design lovers and travelers who want a real dose of colonial-era Yangon.

  • 1920s heritage building, sharply restored
  • Newsroom bar feels straight out of a film
  • Central Pansodan location, walkable to every landmark
  • No full-size pool, only a rooftop plunge
  • Street-facing rooms catch downtown traffic noise

Inya Lake viewsky poolserviced apartmentsnear embassies

Lotte Hotel Yangon is a Korean-run 5-star hotel set in a tall glass tower on the edge of Inya Lake, in the Hlaing district north of the city. It opened in 2017 and holds roughly 343 rooms and suites, plus a separate serviced-apartment wing for long-stay guests who want a kitchen and more private space. The biggest draw is the view: rooms facing the lake have full-height windows that frame the wide water and some of the best sunsets in Yangon. Facilities run deep in the usual Lotte style, with an outdoor sky pool, a 24-hour gym, a Korean-style spa, and several restaurants covering Korean, Chinese, and international food. The location sits close to the embassy quarter, government offices, and the northern business zone, which makes it a calm base for business travelers, families, and couples who want quiet away from the downtown crush. Rooms start around $54 a night.

  • Panoramic Inya Lake views from the rooms and the sky pool
  • Full 5-star Korean-chain facilities, hard to match in Yangon
  • Serviced apartments available for long stays

Sedona Hotel Yangon is a 5-star property managed by Singapore's Keppel Land, sitting on the edge of Inya Lake in the Yankin district — about 15 minutes by car from Downtown and 30-40 minutes from Yangon airport (RGN). It opened in 1998 and added the newer Inya Wing tower in 2017, for around 796 rooms in total. You pick between two worlds: the warm, classic Garden Wing with garden views, or the modern Inya Wing tower facing the lake. What everyone talks about is the outdoor pool, known as the largest in Yangon, ringed by green gardens and cabanas so it feels more like a city resort than a business hotel. There are several restaurants, a pool bar, a spa, a gym and a big ballroom for conferences and weddings. It scores 8.6 on Agoda, 8.5 on Booking and 4.5 on Trip.

Rose Garden Hotel Yangon is a 4-star, roughly 245-room hotel on Nat Mauk Road in the Mingala Taungnyunt district on the Downtown East side of Yangon. It opened in 2002 and reviewers still rank it among the city's best-value midscale picks. The detail everyone mentions is the open-air rooftop pool, which faces the golden Shwedagon Pagoda head-on - best at dusk and after dark when the stupa is lit. Entry-level rooms run about 32 sqm, a notch larger than the typical downtown 4-star, with soft king beds and a separate tub and shower from deluxe grade up. You can walk to Kandawgyi Lake in 10 minutes and to Sule Pagoda and the old Pansodan quarter in 15; Shwedagon is an 8-minute drive, and RGN airport is 30-40 minutes out. Hotel G Yangon is a 4-star boutique of about 109 rooms on Alan Pya Pagoda Street in central Downtown Yangon — a 7-minute walk to Sule Pagoda in the old-town core, and about 1.2 miles from Shwedagon Pagoda (10 minutes by car). The look is smart-boutique: lime-green and grey tones, pop-art graphic walls, the kind of styling you'd expect from a brand with sister hotels in Bangkok, Hong Kong and San Francisco. Every room comes with a Bluetooth stereo, a smart TV and a Nespresso machine, which makes the starting rate of around $31 a night feel generous for this part of the city. The other draw is Babett Eatery & Bar, praised in reviews for its Western food and easy atmosphere. The trade-off: rooms are smaller than the 4-star norm, and the area gets busy by day. Overall 8.3/10 (Agoda 8.3, Booking 8.2), best for couples, solo travelers and design-minded guests who want style over square footage.

  • Sharp boutique design that punches above its 4-star price
  • Central Downtown — Sule Pagoda and the old town on foot
  • Babett Eatery & Bar does genuinely good Western food

Preguntas frecuentes

The Strand 1901 vs Belmond Governor's Residence — ¿cuál gana como estancia patrimonial?
