Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa — hotel No. 1 #1 heritage icon · on Carrasco beach 9.1

📍 Carrasco district at the eastern edge of the city — right on the 22 km La Rambla along the Río de la Plata, only about 10 minutes by car from Montevideo International Airport (MVD) and roughly 25 minutes from the city centre.

🏛️ 1921 Belle Epoque casino, restored in 2013 🌊 On La Rambla along the Río de la Plata ♻️ Uruguay's first single-use-plastic-free hotel
1921 Belle Epoqueon the 22 km La Rambla10 min from the airportMageva spa + casino

Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa is the one Uruguay landmark you cannot overlook. The building is a Belle Epoque casino built in 1921 by French architects Jacques Dunant and Gaston Mallet, standing in the Carrasco district right on La Rambla, Montevideo's waterfront walk of more than 22 kilometres. It sat shuttered for years before Sofitel took it on, restored it heavily and reopened it in 2013 — keeping the high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, the stained-glass dome rotunda and almost all the original detail. Added in were 116 rooms and suites, the well-known Mageva spa, the ground-floor casino, restaurant 1921 from the country's famous chef Hugo Soca, and the title of Uruguay's first single-use-plastic-free hotel. It sits just 10 minutes by car from MVD airport, so it suits the heritage-luxury traveler who wants to land and settle in fast. Overall 9.1/10.

  • 1921 Belle Epoque building, carefully restored in 2013
  • On La Rambla and just 10 minutes from the airport
  • Mageva spa, casino and a famous-chef restaurant on site
  • 20-25 minutes by car from the old town and main sights
  • In-hotel food and bar prices run high versus nearby Carrasco spots

Hotel Montevideo - Leading Hotels of the World is a 5-star boutique that opened in 2022 and became the highest-scoring hotel in the city within a few years. It sits in the heart of Pocitos, Montevideo's chicest seaside neighbourhood, just 400 metres from Pocitos Beach. There are only 80 rooms and suites, with interiors by James Boyd Niven, who used custom furniture throughout — every piece designed for this building — in warm tones of wood and brass that feel more like a wealthy family's art-filled home than a hotel chain. The new landmark is Polo Bamba Skybar, a top-floor bar with a rooftop pool and views across the Pocitos rooftops to the Río de la Plata skyline. As an LHW member it earns 9.6 on Booking and 9.5 on Agoda — very high for a city without many options at this level. Overall 9.5/10, best for couples and luxury travellers who want a new boutique in the best part of town.

  • Newest and highest-scoring hotel in the city (Booking 9.6, Agoda 9.5)

Hyatt Centric Montevideo — hotel No. 3 #3 waterfront views · on the Pocitos Rambla 8.9

📍 On the corner of Rambla Republica del Peru, directly across the road from Pocitos Beach — the sand is a single street crossing away, the old town of Ciudad Vieja is about 15 minutes by car, and Carrasco airport (MVD) is roughly 25 minutes.

🌊 Rambla corner across from Pocitos Beach 🏊 Sky pool + Cuatro Vientos rooftop bar 🏨 Only Hyatt in Uruguay (opened 2020)
On the Pocitos RamblaRio de la Plata view every roomSky pool + rooftop barOnly Hyatt in Uruguay

Hyatt Centric Montevideo is the only Hyatt-branded hotel in Uruguay, opened in 2020 on a corner of Rambla Republica del Peru in Pocitos, the city's most upscale district. The building sits at an angle, so all 132 rooms face the Rio de la Plata — a river so wide it reads like the sea — through floor-to-ceiling glass. Cross the Rambla and you're on Pocitos Beach, where locals walk, cycle and run every evening. Reviews keep circling back to the sky pool and the rooftop bar Cuatro Vientos, where you sip Uruguayan Tannat wine while the sun drops over the water. The 14th-floor restaurant Aora serves modern local food, and rooms run a clean gray-and-black 38–45 sq m. Location scores 9.4 and the hotel overall 8.9/10 — the most polished waterfront-plus-new-build combination in town.

  • Rambla corner spot, Rio de la Plata view from all 132 rooms
  • Sky pool and rooftop bar built for the sunset
  • Brand-new Hyatt, international-standard service in English
  • 15 minutes by car from the old town — too far to walk
  • Highest room rates in the city, breakfast often charged separately

Esplendor by Wyndham Montevideo Cervantes is a 4-star heritage hotel of 105 rooms set inside an Art Deco building from 1927 in the heart of Centro — on Soriano street, a 2-minute walk from Plaza del Entrevero. What makes it special is the building's history: writers including Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda and Federico García Lorca all stayed here, and there is still a Borges Suite in the rooms the Argentine writer favored. A 2008 renovation turned it into a boutique art hotel in the Esplendor by Wyndham group, with rotating art along the walls and lobby. The other draw is the rooftop, with a small pool looking over the Río de la Plata bay and the old-town rooftops. You can walk to Plaza Independencia in 5 minutes and to the Solís Theatre and Ciudad Vieja in 10. The airport sits 25-35 minutes away by car.

1928 heritage buildingOn the Rambla, ocean views15 min to MVD airportQuiet Carrasco district

Cottage Carrasco is a small boutique hotel set inside a red-brick English-cottage building from 1928, sitting right on Rambla República de México at the eastern edge of Montevideo — cross the street and you are on the Atlantic shore. The draw is the old-house feeling that survives almost intact: the high pitched roof, dark interior wood, a lobby fireplace, and a small garden wrapped around the building. Rooms are warm and classic rather than slick, split between garden views and ocean views. There is an indoor pool and a small outdoor pool in the garden, a quiet little spa, and breakfast that arrives plated at your table instead of a buffet line. Carrasco is the oldest and calmest villa district in the city, just 15 minutes by car from Carrasco International Airport (MVD) and about 25 minutes from downtown Ciudad Vieja. It scores 8.7/10 (Agoda 8.7, Booking 8.8) and suits couples, quiet-seekers, and anyone breaking a long-haul connection.

  • Genuine 1928 heritage building with a European old-house feel
  • On the Rambla — cross the street to the beach

Preguntas frecuentes

Carrasco vs Pocitos vs Punta Carretas — ¿qué barrio elegir?
