Valletta is the smallest capital in the EU — a 600 by 1000 metre peninsula of honey-coloured sandstone the Knights of St John built after the 1565 Great Siege. You can walk end to end in 20 minutes, which means every hotel on this list puts you steps from St John's Co-Cathedral (yes, the one with the signed Caravaggio) and the Upper Barrakka Gardens noon cannon. Where you stay still shapes the trip though. The Old Town inside the bastions gets you palazzo stays with Grand Harbour views and 1-euro pastizzi at 8am, while Floriana sits right at City Gate next to the central bus station. Mdina, the Silent City that played King's Landing in Game of Thrones, is a 30-minute Bus 51 away, and Sliema across the harbour is a 5-minute ferry. We've sorted ten picks across all budgets — Knights' palazzos at the top, a Mdina hideaway, a Sliema promenade pick, and a hostel for backpackers. Mid-EU prices: 4-6 EUR a Cisk, 18-30 EUR dinners, 5-star rooms from around 180 EUR if you book ahead.

Four palazzos into one hotelEvery room Grand Harbour viewION Harbour 2-Michelin-star23-room exclusive boutique

Iniala Harbour House is a 23-room-and-suite boutique built by knitting four historic palazzos together along St. Barbara Bastion, high above Valletta's Grand Harbour. It opened in 2023 after years of restoration, with a team of renowned designers giving every room its own character — old wooden beams overhead, original honey-toned Maltese limestone walls, painted Valletta-style wooden balconies, and custom-made craft furniture. Every room opens onto the Grand Harbour and the 16th-century knights' fortifications across the water. The other headline is ION Harbour by Simon Rogan, Malta's first 2-Michelin-star restaurant, cooking mainly with Maltese island produce. Add a basement Mediterranean spa, an indoor pool, and a rooftop bar that looks across to the Three Cities, and reviews call it the most luxurious place to stay in Valletta right now. Overall 9.4/10, best for couples and design-minded travelers who love this World Heritage city's history.

  • Four restored palazzos combined into one boutique with renowned design
  • ION Harbour, Malta's first 2-Michelin-star restaurant
  • Every room has a Grand Harbour view, plus warm service guests praise
  • Very expensive — suites in particular start high, and ION Harbour adds thousands more per meal

The Phoenicia Malta has stood at the gateway to Valletta since 1933, and it is the only hotel in the country that belongs to the Leading Hotels of the World collection. The building is classic Art Deco, wrapped on three sides by 7 acres of fortification gardens — one of the largest private green spaces in the city. The headline addition after the renovation is the Bastion Pool, an outdoor pool built on the historic ramparts with a panoramic view across Marsamxett Harbour to Sliema. Inside there are 136 rooms and suites, several restaurants from the signature Mediterranean Contessa to fine-dining The Phoenix, the Phoenicia Spa, and a lobby bar under a high Art Deco ceiling. It is a 3-minute walk to City Gate and the central bus station, and roughly 15-20 minutes to the airport. It scores 8.8/10 and suits couples and travelers who want a hotel with a real story.

  • At Valletta's City Gate — a 3-minute walk
  • 7-acre garden plus the harbour-view Bastion Pool
  • Carefully restored 1933 historic building
  • Priced above the Malta 5-star average
  • Some classic rooms feel dated for modern tastes

17th-century palazzoon Merchants StreetUnder Grain Michelinrooftop pool dome view

Rosselli AX Privilege is a 25-room boutique tucked into a 17th-century palazzo right on Merchants Street, the main artery of Valletta's old town. The pale limestone building was once the noble home of the Rosselli family, and AX Hotels restored it carefully before opening it as a hotel in 2018 — keeping the original stone walls, tall vaulted ceilings, stone spiral staircase and the malachite-green wooden balconies you only see in Malta. The basement holds Under Grain, a one-Michelin-star restaurant serving a contemporary Mediterranean tasting menu, while the top floor is a compact rooftop pool framing the dome of St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral above a sea of old-town stone roofs. Reviewers keep praising the personal, name-remembering service and a location that puts the whole old town on foot. It scores 8.9/10 and suits couples and luxury travelers after a genuinely boutique stay.

  • Historic palazzo in the heart of the old town, a 3-minute walk to St. John's Co-Cathedral
  • One-Michelin-star Under Grain is inside the building
  • Rooftop pool with a stunning view of the old-town dome
  • Only 25 rooms, so facilities are limited — no real gym or full spa
  • Rooftop pool is small and only comfortable in the warm months

📍 On Old Theatre Street in Valletta's old town — about 2 minutes' walk to Manoel Theatre, 5 minutes to St John's Co-Cathedral, 8 minutes to the City Gate, and roughly a 25-minute drive from Malta International Airport (MLA).

🏛️ 19th-century townhouse on Old Theatre Street 🛁 Upper-floor suites with a private jacuzzi 🌇 Rooftop terrace over the old-town rooftops
9-room boutiqueSmall Luxury Hotelsneoclassical townhousewalk to Manoel Theatre

Casa Ellul was the first boutique design hotel on the island of Malta, set inside a 19th-century neoclassical townhouse on Old Theatre Street in the heart of Valletta's old town. With just 9 rooms and suites, it feels quiet and private — more like staying at the home of a tasteful friend in southern Europe than at a big chain. The design keeps the original Maltese bones — high limestone ceilings, old patterned-tile floors, a colourful timber Maltese balcony — and blends them with contemporary furniture and local art. Several upper-floor suites have a private jacuzzi, some come with their own wooden balcony, and a small rooftop terrace looks out over the honey-coloured sandstone roofs and church domes of the old town. Manoel Theatre is about a 2-minute walk and St John's Co-Cathedral about 5 minutes, with good restaurants all around. It scores 9.2/10 overall and suits couples and design lovers after something personal.

  • Just 9 rooms, quiet and private
  • Old-town location, walk to everything
  • Real Maltese old-meets-new design

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux is the only hotel inside the walls of Mdina, Malta's old capital and a town that has been lived in for more than 4,000 years. The building is an early-17th-century palazzo once owned by the noble Maltese-knight family Moscati Parisio, carefully restored into a 17-suite boutique. Each room is dressed with real antique furniture, French damask and original stone fireplaces; some have a balcony that looks out over the cliff edge across the island toward the harbour at Valletta in the distance. The heart of the place is de Mondion, a 1-Michelin-star rooftop restaurant with a 360-degree view and a Michelin Key. After dark, when the day-trippers leave, you get church bells and warm light on medieval stone almost to yourself. Real guests single out the warm, first-name service and a location that feels like renting the whole town for the night. Overall 9.0/10 — best for couples and romantics who love an old medieval city.

🏛️ Restored 1500s palazzo 🛁 Spa in an old stone cistern 🌅 Rooftop pool over the Grand Harbour

Palazzo Consiglia is a 13-room boutique hotel inside a 16th-century palazzo on St Ursula Street, in the heart of Valletta's UNESCO-listed old town. The IK Collection restoration kept the honey-toned Globigerina stone walls, old timber beams and original Maltese tile floors, then layered in just enough contemporary design. The two features reviewers keep coming back to: a small spa set in an underground stone water cistern that's centuries old, and a rooftop pool facing the Grand Harbour, where you can nurse a drink and watch the sun drop behind the Three Cities. The address sits on a quiet lane off the main Republic Street, yet it's a 5-minute walk to St John's Co-Cathedral and just 2 minutes to Lower Barrakka Gardens. Agoda gives it 9.0 and Booking 9.1, for a combined 9.0/10 — a fit for couples and boutique-luxury travelers who want Valletta's old-town charm up close.

  • Carefully restored 16th-century palazzo with real character
  • Rooftop pool over the Grand Harbour plus a spa in an old water cistern
  • Quiet lane, yet a 5-minute walk to every landmark
  • Only 13 rooms — fills fast, so book ahead
  • No lift to every floor; heavy bags are a hassle on the old stone stairs

📍 Head of Republic Street, right at the mouth of Valletta — 1 minute on foot to the City Gate and the main bus stops, 3 minutes to St John's Co-Cathedral, 8 minutes to the Sliema ferry, and about a 25–30 minute drive from Malta International Airport (MLA).

🏛️ 17th-century palazzo of the Zammit family 🚪 Head of Republic Street, right at the City Gate 🌇 Small rooftop for drinks over the old town
17th-century palazzohead of Republic Streetwooden Maltese balconiesrooftop old-town views

Domus Zamittello is a 4-star, 21-room boutique tucked inside a 17th-century baroque palazzo that once belonged to the noble Zammit family, right at the head of Republic Street, Valletta's main artery. Walk out of the lobby and you're at the City Gate that Renzo Piano redesigned, with the island-wide Valletta Terminus bus hub next door. It's a 3-minute walk to the famous St John's Co-Cathedral, 7 minutes to Upper Barrakka Gardens, and 8 minutes to the Sliema ferry; the airport (MLA) is a 25–30 minute drive. The building keeps its high stone ceilings, marble staircase and wooden Maltese balconies, and rooms lean classic — dark woven fabrics, chandeliers, carved wood. A small rooftop looks over the old town's sandstone roofs. Reviews land on the same two things: the location and the warm, genuinely friendly staff. Best for couples and history lovers who want to walk every corner of this UNESCO city.

  • Head-of-Valletta location — out of the car and into the lobby
  • A real 17th-century palazzo, not a recreation
  • Warm staff who know the city well
  • Some rooms are small, set by the old building's footprint
  • No swimming pool

AX The Saint John is a 21-room boutique hidden on Merchants Street, one of the oldest lanes in the heart of Valletta — Malta's capital, listed in full as a UNESCO World Heritage city. The building is warm cream Maltese limestone from the 17th century, when the Knights of St John still ran the island; it was fully restored and reopened in 2018 by local group AX Hotels, who have brought several historic Valletta buildings back to life. The draws are the original vaulted stone ceilings in the lobby and ground-floor suites, classic emerald-green Maltese wooden balconies on the street-facing rooms, and a small rooftop that looks onto the dome of St John's Co-Cathedral and, further off, Grand Harbour. It's a 5-minute walk to the Cathedral, 7 to the city gate, 12 to the Sliema ferry. Overall 9.2/10, from about $157 a night — softer than the bigger AX sisters, and couples on Booking give it 9.8.

  • 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the Co-Cathedral and every landmark

AX The Palace is a 5-star, 152-room hotel on High Street, in the busiest shopping-and-dining stretch of northern Sliema. The headline draw is a rooftop infinity pool that looks out over Marsamxett Harbour at the full Valletta skyline, plus TemptAsian Spa — at roughly 1,400 sqm, the largest spa in the area, with an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, salt room and a Turkish hammam. The in-house TemptAsian restaurant serves contemporary Asian food and gets talked about. It is an easy 5-minute walk to the Sliema–Valletta ferry, then a 10-minute crossing into the capital. Guest reviews line up on value, clean rooms and friendly staff, with 8.8 on Booking and 8.6 on Agoda for an overall 8.6/10 — a solid pick for mid-budget travellers who want a fully equipped 5-star at a reachable price.

Two Pillows Boutique Hostel is a small boutique hostel set in a carefully restored traditional Maltese townhouse, right in the middle of Sliema across the bay from Valletta. The Sliema ferry terminal sits about 200 metres away — a 3-minute walk — and from there it is a 10-minute crossing into the capital. The draw is the building itself: a honey-coloured limestone shell with proper Maltese wooden balconies. You can pick a 4-to-8-bed dorm if you are backpacking, or a private en-suite double if you want a bit of privacy on a light budget, with rates starting around $34 a night. Real guest reviews — Agoda 8.9 and Booking 9.0 — agree on the warm staff, the easy location and rooms that come out cleaner than you would expect from a hostel. There is a shared kitchen and a rooftop terrace to sit on. Overall score 8.9/10.

Frequently Asked Questions

First-timer neighborhood — Valletta Old Town or Sliema?
Valletta Old Town wins for a first trip, hands down. You'll walk out the door into 16th-century streets and reach every major sight in 10 minutes. Sliema is cheaper, has the promenade and bigger hotels, and the 5-minute ferry (2 EUR) makes it a smart base if you're staying 4+ nights or watching the budget — but you'll always be commuting to the good stuff.
Smallest EU capital — how compact is it really?
600 by 1000 metres of peninsula, total. Walking the full length takes about 20 minutes if you don't stop, and every sight inside the bastions is within 15 minutes on foot. You don't need taxis or buses inside Valletta itself. Wear flat shoes though — the streets are stepped in places and the sandstone gets slick in rain.
Worth the Mdina day trip?
Yes, easily. The Silent City is a walled medieval town on a hilltop 30 minutes away on Bus 51 or 52 (2 EUR each way), and it's noticeably quieter and older-feeling than Valletta. Game of Thrones fans will recognise it as King's Landing from season one. Go late afternoon, watch sunset from the bastions, and grab dinner at Fontanella for that view.
Blue Lagoon Comino — go for sunset?
Honestly, go early morning instead. Comino's turquoise water is the real deal but it gets swamped with day-boats by 11am. Take the first ferry from Marfa or a small operator from Sliema, swim before the crowds, and you'll be back in Valletta by mid-afternoon. Sunset boats exist but the lagoon faces northeast — not the magic-hour shot you'd hope for.
Is the Caravaggio cathedral worth the 15 EUR?
Legit yes, even if you're not an art person. The Beheading of John the Baptist is the only painting Caravaggio ever signed and it's enormous — you stand a few metres from it. Add the marble tomb floor with 400 knight burials and eight insanely decorated chapels, and 15 EUR is a steal. Free audio guide included.
When's the sweet spot to visit?
April-May and September-October are the sweet spot — high 20s, sea still swimmable, no crowds. Summer (June-August) hits 33-35°C and gets packed. Winter (Dec-Feb) is mild at 12-18°C and great for sightseeing, plus you'll catch Carnival in February. Just don't expect beach weather.
