Real talk: Pokhara is Nepal's mountain town done right. Phewa Lake fills the bowl below town, and when the clouds part you get the full white wall of Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (the fishtail peak), and Annapurna South looming straight behind it like a postcard come to life. The Lakeside strip (locals call it Baidam) runs about a kilometer along the water — wall-to-wall cafes, trekking gear shops, paragliding offices, and momo (Nepali dumpling) joints. It's where every trekker decompresses before flying to Jomsom for the Annapurna trails. Sarangkot ridge above town is the sunrise viewpoint everyone gets up at 4 AM for, and yeah — it's worth it. Same ridge is the take-off zone for paragliders, which is why Pokhara is the paragliding capital of South Asia. We sorted 8 hotels by what kind of trip you're running: lakeside chill (Temple Tree, Barahi), 5-star resort vibes (Hotel Pokhara Grande), Annapurna-view budget (Hotel Lake Star), or maximum-pool relaxing (Atithi has the biggest pool in town). All within walking distance of the lake.

We open the list with Temple Tree Resort & Spa — a 4-star resort built in traditional Nepali Newari style, all red brick and carved wood, in the Lakeside (Baidam) district of Pokhara. It is a 5-minute walk to Phewa Lake and the main Lakeside strip, so evening lake walks and the hundreds of local cafes and restaurants are all on your doorstep. It holds a 9.0/10 guest score on Agoda, prices start around $91/night, and it works best for couples and small families who want a hotel that actually feels Nepali rather than another chain. Hotel Pokhara Grande is the largest 5-star hotel in the city, and that scale is the whole pitch — it packs in more than the boutiques can. It sits in Pardi Bazaar, about 2 km from Phewa Lake and the Lakeside strip, a short 5-minute drive away. On site you get the biggest outdoor pool in town, a spa, a 24-hour gym and two restaurants, with buffet breakfast folded into the room rate. Book a high north-facing room and on a clear morning you can see the Annapurna range from your window. It scores 8.5/10 and starts around $80 a night — genuinely good money for a full-service 5-star. The trade-off is location: you are not on the lake, so you will be grabbing a taxi or the hotel car for dinner. For families and business travelers who want everything in one building, that is an easy compromise.

  • Largest 5-star in Pokhara, international standard
  • Biggest outdoor pool in town, great for kids
  • From about $80 a night — strong value for a 5-star
  • Not on Lakeside — a 5-minute drive to the bars and restaurants

Frequently Asked Questions

Kathmandu to Pokhara — fly or bus?
Fly if you can swing it. Buddha Air or Yeti Airlines takes 25-30 minutes with full Himalayan range views (around THB 4,000-5,500). Tourist coach is 7-8 hours for THB 800-1,000 — long but scenic. Pokhara also has a new international airport now with direct flights from select cities.
Stay on Lakeside or the new town?
Lakeside (Baidam), no question. Every hotel in this guide is right there — that's where the cafes, paragliding offices, boat rentals, and walking access to Phewa Lake all are. The newer town across the bay is residential with zero tourist scene.
Sarangkot sunrise — when do you actually need to leave?
Be at Sarangkot by 5:30 AM for the 6:00 sunrise (give or take by season). Most hotels arrange jeep transfers for THB 350-450 a person, leaving around 4:45 AM. Combine it with breakfast at one of the ridge cafes before heading back down by 8.
How long should you stay in Pokhara?
Two to three nights covers Lakeside, the Sarangkot sunrise run, Davis Falls, World Peace Pagoda, and a tandem paragliding flight (THB 3,000-4,000). Add days if you're trekking Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp — you'll be starting and ending here either way.
Best season to visit Pokhara?
October-November is the absolute sweet spot — clearest skies, Annapurna visible daily, perfect trekking temps. March-May brings the rhododendrons in bloom. Skip June-August (monsoon hides the mountains) and December-January gets brutally cold even though skies stay clear.
Want the full Thai version?
Yes — our complete Thai guide covers the Pokhara 3-day itinerary, Sarangkot sunrise timing, paragliding booking strategy, and detailed reviews of each lakeside hotel.
