Honest take: Astana is unlike any other capital on Earth — it's basically Norman Foster, Kisho Kurokawa, and a battalion of star architects given a blank steppe in the 1990s and told to go nuts. The 97 m Bayterek Tower with the golden egg on top is the icon. Khan Shatyr is Foster's transparent mega-tent (the world's largest at 150 m) with a tropical beach inside while it's -30°C outside. Wild place. The name flipped to Nur-Sultan in 2019, then back to Astana in 2022 — you'll see both on maps and airline tickets. We reviewed 8 hotels: five-star icons on the Left Bank government strip (Ritz-Carlton Astana at 9.2/10 inside Talan Towers, St. Regis with 24-hour butler service per room, Hilton steps from Khan Shatyr), upper mid-range (Astana Marriott 500 m from Bayterek, Hyatt Regency rooftop dining, Radisson opposite Ak Orda palace), and value picks (Park Inn from 2,400 baht, ibis Astana around 1,700 baht with breakfast). All rated 8.0+ by actual guests.

Radisson Hotel Astana — hotel No. 6 #6 4-star value · indoor pool 8.5

🏊 Indoor pool, open year-round 💰 Rooms from about $91 a night 🏨 International Radisson chain
Radisson 4-starindoor poolnear Bayterekgood value

Radisson Hotel Astana is the best-value international-chain hotel in the city once you step below the 5-star bracket, scoring 8.5/10 with rooms from around $91 a night. You get the things that actually matter in Astana — an indoor pool that runs all year, a fitness room, an on-site restaurant with a full buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and parking — without paying the Ritz or St. Regis premium. It sits in the city centre roughly 1 km from Bayterek Tower, a 12-minute walk or a 4-minute taxi away. Reviewers single out the service and front-desk staff, who speak good English — handy in a city where that isn't a given. It won't feel as plush as the 5-star towers, and parts of the building are starting to show their age, but for travellers who want a known chain standard at a price they can actually justify, this is the sensible pick.

  • Roughly 1 km from Bayterek Tower
  • Not as plush as the 5-star towers

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I visit Astana?
Late May to early September is basically the only realistic window — daytime hits a pleasant 25°C with long sunsets. Winter (Dec-Feb) averages -15 to -35°C with brutal steppe winds and is one of the coldest capitals on Earth. Bayterek covered in snow does photograph beautifully if you can handle the cold.
Wait, did Astana actually change names twice?
Yep. Astana got renamed to Nur-Sultan in 2019 to honor Nursultan Nazarbayev, then the government switched it back to Astana in September 2022. Official name is Astana now, but you'll still see Nur-Sultan in some airline systems and older maps. Either way, same city.
How do I get around?
Yandex Go (the Uber-equivalent) is your best friend — rides run 500-1,500 tenge (~35-110 baht) across town. The new LRT light rail opened late 2025 and links the airport to the center in 25 min. BRT bus covers the main routes for almost nothing. The city's designed for cars so distances are big.
Astana or Almaty — should I do both?
Totally different cities. Almaty is the older cultural capital with tree-lined avenues and the Tian Shan mountains right there. Astana is the futurist showpiece on flat steppe. Most travelers do 2 nights Astana + 3-4 nights Almaty with day trips to Charyn Canyon. Different vibes, both worth it.
What about visas for Kazakhstan?
Thai passports need an e-visa (around 2,000 baht, 5 working days online). EU/US/UK/Japan/Korea get 30-day visa-free entry. Astana airport is well-connected — Air Astana flies direct from Bangkok via Almaty, and the new LRT makes the airport-to-city run painless.
Got a Thai version with the architecture walking route?
Yes — our complete Thai guide covers Bayterek viewing tips, Khan Shatyr beach access, and detailed reviews of every hotel with price comparisons across 3 booking sites.
