Mürren has no cars, no road connecting it to the outside world — only a cable car and a small electric train get you in or out. The view of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau from a balcony here ranks among the most striking in Europe, and every step through the village makes the modern world feel agreeably far away. This is a reward for travelers willing to make the short journey up.
#1 Schilthorn
At 2,970 m, Schilthorn is famous as the filming location for the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). The Piz Gloria station at the top rotates a full 360 degrees every 55 minutes, giving unobstructed views of more than 200 Alpine peaks — including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau — and on clear days you can pick out Mont Blanc in France. The four-stage cable car ride from Lauterbrunnen to the summit takes roughly 30 minutes.
- Always check the forecast before heading up. On overcast days the view disappears entirely — the SRF Meteo app is the most accurate for Swiss mountain weather.
- Buy the Schilthorn Combo Ticket from Stechelberg: it's cheaper than purchasing each stage separately, starting at around CHF 100 per person.
- The Piz Gloria restaurant rotates slowly. If you're prone to motion sickness, choose a seat near the centre rather than against the windows.
#2 Mürren Car-Free Village
Mürren is one of the highest and quietest villages in Switzerland. No cars, no main road linking it to any other town. Traditional timber chalets line the edge of a cliff that drops more than 700 m down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley below. The silence is deep enough that you can hear cowbells and the wind across the Alpine meadows. Arthur Conan Doyle once convalesced here and wrote about it in his letters.
- You can walk the whole village in under 30 minutes, but you could spend an entire day on a bench at the cliff edge without getting bored.
- The small shops and supermarket in the village carry limited stock at higher prices than the valley. Buy essentials in Interlaken before coming up.
- Just after 7:00 in the morning, before day-trip visitors arrive, the village is at its most beautiful and peaceful.
#3 Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau Panorama
From the cliff edge in Mürren you can see all three giants of the Bernese Oberland at once without climbing any of them. The Eiger (3,967 m) dominates the foreground with its North Face — a wall considered the ultimate test by the world's top alpinists. The Mönch (4,107 m) stands in the middle, and the Jungfrau (4,158 m), the highest of the three, closes the right side of the frame. The view is every bit as dramatic as what you'd see from a summit, and it costs nothing extra.
- The best photo spot is along the wooden fence on the village's eastern side. Come in the morning when the light falls on the faces of the peaks — in the afternoon the sun is behind them.
- In winter, fresh snow on the peaks is at its cleanest. In summer, glaciers stand out more clearly.
- Staying overnight in Mürren is the only reliable way to catch this view at golden sunrise — day-trippers nearly always miss it.
#4 Allmendhubel Flower Park
The easiest mountain excursion from Mürren — a 5-minute funicular ride brings you to an Alpine flower park in summer and a ski area in winter. The restaurant at the top looks out far across the Lauterbrunnen Valley below. This is also the starting point of the famous North Face Trail, which runs along the cliff face above the valley with views of the Eiger the entire way.
- July and August are peak wildflower season — the Alpine meadow is at its most photogenic during these months.
- The funicular costs roughly CHF 10–12 return per person; holders of the Swiss Travel Pass ride free.
- The North Face Trail from Allmendhubel to Gimmelwald takes 2–3 hours at a moderate pace. Proper hiking shoes with grip are essential.
#5 North Face Trail
A moderate-grade hiking trail that visitors to Mürren consistently cite as one of the most beautiful walks in the Swiss Alps. The route follows a steep cliff, passing waterfalls and Alpine meadows, with the Eiger's North Face visible and close the whole way. The name comes from that wall — the Nordwand — which towers over the trail from start to finish. Difficulty: moderate. Duration: 2.5–3 hours.
- This is a genuine moderate trail with steep sections and slippery rock. Proper hiking boots are essential — do not attempt it in ordinary trainers.
- Starting from Allmendhubel and descending to Gimmelwald is significantly easier than going the other direction.
- The Mürrenbach waterfall sits roughly halfway along. It is particularly impressive in spring when snowmelt swells the flow.
#6 Lauterbrunnen Valley Viewpoint
From Mürren's cliff edge you can look straight down into the glacially carved U-shaped valley of Lauterbrunnen, formed around 10,000 years ago. The valley has more than 72 waterfalls, including the Staubbach — over 300 m tall and clearly visible from up here — dropping against tiny houses and deep-green meadows on the valley floor. This is the landscape that reportedly inspired J.R.R. Tolkien's vision of Rivendell.
- The best viewpoint is near the southern rail line, about 5 minutes' walk from the train station.
- Morning mist often fills the valley. Wait until after 09:00 for the fog to clear if you want to see the valley floor.
- Consider spending half a day down in Lauterbrunnen itself to see the waterfalls up close, then return to Mürren in the evening.

Before You Pack
Mürren is at its finest in winter (December–March) when snow covers the village and the ski runs are fully open, and in summer (June–September) when Alpine wildflowers are out and every hiking trail is clear. Plan for at least 2 nights to do both Schilthorn and the North Face Trail justice.
