The Kingsbury Hotel

In-Depth Review
Rooms and decor
Picture a stately modern tower from the early 2010s standing at the very end of Galle Face Green, the seafront lawn everyone calls the heart of Colombo — that's the first hook of The Kingsbury Hotel. This is not a brand-new, just-unwrapped property; it carries more than half a century of history. It first opened in 1973 as the legendary Hotel Ceylon Intercontinental, one of Sri Lanka's earliest five-star hotels, before a full renovation and rebrand to Kingsbury under the Hayleys group in 2011 gave the building an entirely new face while keeping its prime spot. The 229 rooms and suites are spread across 12 floors, done in warm browns, dark wood and clean white linens, and it reads as a familiar international five-star the moment you open the door. The room everyone talks about is the Premier Ocean View: pull the curtain and the Indian Ocean stretches out alongside the green lawn in one frame. Guests in the high rooms on floors 11–12 say opening the curtain that first morning is a genuine postcard moment. The rear-facing Premier City View rooms look onto the buildings and the new Port City instead — a different mood, with the appeal of a city under construction.
Food and amenities
The other heart of the Kingsbury is its restaurants, and there's a decent spread for a city hotel. Start with Harbour Court, the main buffet venue serving breakfast, lunch and dinner — and reviews are unanimous that breakfast is the standout. There are fresh Sri Lankan hoppers cooked at the griddle (egg and plain), a generous run of South Indian curries, small dim sum, omelettes and fried eggs to order, fresh Western pastries, fruit and yogurt, and proper Ceylon tea, the country's signature. Anyone who likes sampling local food in a cool air-conditioned dining room will be happy. Next is Yumi, a Japanese restaurant with a sushi counter and teppanyaki, while Indian and Sri Lankan seafood gets its own venue. The one many guests climb to at dusk is 26 The Kingsbury, the top-floor rooftop bar with open views over the city and the Indian Ocean, and cocktails that run cheaper than at the other five-stars in town. The pool is a mid-sized rooftop affair facing the sea — dip your feet, order a drink, watch the water. There's a 24-hour gym, a small compact spa, and an airport shuttle for anyone who'd rather not flag a taxi.
Location and getting there
Location is the Kingsbury's strongest card by a distance. The hotel sits at the very end of Galle Face Green, a near-kilometre seafront lawn where Colombo of all ages comes to stroll every evening — families flying kites, young couples courting, older folks listening to the surf. From the lobby it's a 2-minute walk. Come evening, local food carts line up selling Isso Wade (the prawn fritters that are a beloved Sri Lankan snack), pickled mango and hoppers at local-friend prices, so a few steps out of the hotel puts you straight into the city's real rhythm. On one side sits Colombo Port City, the vast new business, finance and shopping district being built on reclaimed land — sitting here feels like watching the city's history being rewritten out front. Fort Railway Station, the old city's central rail hub, is about 1 km away, under 5 minutes by tuk-tuk; trains to Galle or Nuwara Eliya start right there. The airport (BIA) is 35–45 minutes by car depending on traffic. The chaotic old Pettah market is a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride, and the important Gangaramaya temple isn't far either.
Things to know before booking
Straight talk to help you decide. The complaint that comes up most is the building's age. Despite the major 2011 rebrand renovation, the original tower dates to 1973, so some details (door frames, certain curtains, bathroom tubs, hallway carpet) show their years. Some reviewers compare it to the nearby Shangri-La or Cinnamon Grand and say plainly it isn't the newest hotel in the city; if a freshly-minted room is non-negotiable, this may not be your first pick. The second thing: same-name rooms like the Premier come in both ocean-facing and Port-City-facing (still under construction) versions. Pay the same money and get a construction view and you'll be sorry, so email ahead and specify you want a room facing Galle Face Green / the ocean only, ideally on floor 8 or higher for the fullest view. Third, Wi-Fi can lag when lots of guests are online at once, and the lifts back up at breakfast when everyone heads down together. Last, you may hear some noise from the port and Port City construction in low rear-facing rooms — if you're a light sleeper, just take a high ocean-facing room and get both the view and the quiet.
Our take
After reading the real reviews and comparing it against the other five-stars around Galle Face and Fort, The Kingsbury lands as the sensible choice for anyone who wants the best central Colombo location at a more reasonable price than newer rivals like the Cinnamon Grand or Shangri-La. It wins on its spot right at Galle Face Green, the sea-view rooms that frame both the lawn and the ocean in one shot, a top-tier city breakfast with proper Sri Lankan food, and a rooftop bar with real atmosphere. The main drawbacks are the building's visible age and the rooms whose views can't match the seaside. Overall we give it 8.6/10 — best for couples and mid-budget luxury travelers who want to be in the middle of everything with a sea view, for a short 2–3 night stay before catching the train to Galle or Nuwara Eliya, or for a business trip near Fort and the new Port City. If you expect a brand-new, design-forward hotel, this isn't it — but if you value location and the story of a legendary tower that's lasted half a century, the Kingsbury is the right answer.

The Honest Verdict — pros & what to know
- The location is the whole story — you're at the very end of Galle Face Green, a 2-minute walk to the seafront lawn where Colombo strolls every evening, and about 1 km from Fort Railway Station.
- The Premier Ocean View is the genuine highlight — it faces the Indian Ocean with Galle Face Green stretching along the horizon in the same frame, and several reviewers call the upgrade well worth the extra money.
- The breakfast buffet at Harbour Court is properly international — fresh-cooked Sri Lankan hoppers at the griddle, South Indian curries, omelettes to order and a full Western spread, and it's the one thing every review praises in unison.
- There's a real spread of restaurants in the tower: Japanese at Yumi, Chinese and Indian-Sri Lankan seafood options, and the top-floor rooftop bar 26 The Kingsbury with 360-degree city and ocean views, ideal for a sundowner.
- You're right next to the new Colombo Port City, the reclaimed-land business and shopping district taking shape beside the hotel — handy for business travelers and for sightseers who want to be in the middle of everything.
- The tower is old. Even with the major 2011 rebrand renovation, the original building dates to 1973, so door frames, some curtains and bathroom tubs show wear — a few reviewers say plainly it isn't the newest hotel in the city next to a Shangri-La or Cinnamon Grand.
- Rooms facing the city or the Port City side at the back look onto construction and buildings, not the sea — at the same price that stings, so you must specify an ocean-facing room clearly when you book.
- Wi-Fi can lag at busy times and the lifts back up in the morning when guests pour down to the buffet together, so expect a wait around 8am.

Insider Tips
- Book the Premier Ocean View directly and state clearly that you want it facing Galle Face Green — some rooms with the same name face the Port City construction side, which is a completely different view.
- Head up to the rooftop bar 26 The Kingsbury at sunset for the long view of Galle Face Green meeting the Indian Ocean — many guests rate it the best sight of their whole Colombo trip.
- Walk out the front door in the evening onto Galle Face Green for Isso Wade (prawn fritters) and hoppers from the beachfront food carts — a local ritual you shouldn't skip.
