Picture a cream-stone Belle Epoque building, more than a hundred years old, standing on the edge of Lake Zurich, then handed to Philippe Starck and rebuilt into a luxury yacht on land. That's the pull of La Reserve Eden au Lac Zurich. The building has stood since 1909 and was a long-running city hotel before the La Reserve group closed it, renovated it, and reopened in 2020, joining Leading Hotels of the World right away. With only about 40 rooms and suites, it stays quiet and private. Step inside and it feels like boarding a private yacht — gleaming parquet floors, warm brown leather furniture, a sea-navy-and-white nautical palette, and brass details that Starck pushed down to the door handles. Lake-facing rooms get a small balcony for the morning air; open the door and the lake catches the light with the Alps along the horizon. Plenty of reviewers say that view is the reason they'd return. A Classic Room still gives you the full design, but if the budget stretches, we'd push for a Lake View Room or Lake Suite.

Food and amenities

The hotel's other heart is Eden Kitchen & Bar, the main dining room with 1 Michelin star under chef Marco Ortolani. It serves contemporary Mediterranean-Italian food in a room Starck made to feel like dining aboard a luxury yacht — polished wood tables, leather chairs, warm light, and big windows onto the lake. Many reviews call it the most memorable dinner of the trip, especially a window table at sunset when the light turns the water gold. Beside it sits La Muna Bar, a cocktail bar Starck designed like the salon of a golden-age ocean liner, dim and low-lit with live piano — good for a drink before or after dinner. In summer the lakeside Eden Terrace opens for lunch in the breeze off the water. There's no big resort-style spa here, but the in-room Nescens treatments, La Reserve's signature, come to your own room. You also get bikes to borrow for the lake path and an LHW-level concierge who handles everything from a table at another Michelin restaurant to a yacht out on the lake.

Location and getting there

The location is the trump card. The hotel sits on the lake in Seefeld, one of the city's calmest and smartest districts, with the lakeside promenade running both directions right outside the door. Stadelhofen station, a main rail junction, is about a 5-minute walk, and from there trains reach the rest of Switzerland easily. The Bellevue tram stop and the Opernhaus are roughly 4 minutes on foot, and crossing the Quaibrücke bridge brings you into Zurich's Old Town, full of stone lanes, chocolate shops, and good restaurants. The main shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, is about 15 minutes away or a few tram stops, and Zurich airport (ZRH) is a 15-20 minute drive or a direct train from Stadelhofen. In short, you can walk to almost everything a visitor wants in Zurich without taking a car.

Things to know before booking

Straight talk to help you decide. First, the price — La Reserve Eden au Lac is among the most expensive hotels in Zurich, starting around the equivalent of $1,000 a night and climbing past $2,570 in high season or during festivals. It's an expensive hotel in an already expensive city, so plan the budget. Second, it's a boutique in a hundred-year-old building, so most rooms aren't as roomy as a new chain hotel; the Classic Room especially can feel smaller than the price suggests, so step up to a Junior Suite or higher if you want space. Third, the surroundings — Seefeld is calm and genuinely on the lake, but it's a fair distance from Bahnhofstrasse, and the nearby Bellevue area gets busy with bars on weekends, so street-facing rooms may catch some noise on Friday and Saturday nights. Ask for a lake-facing room and it's much quieter. Finally, the spa is in-room only; if you want a large spa or an indoor resort pool, you won't find it here.

After reading through a stack of real reviews, La Reserve Eden au Lac Zurich sells a story in its design, a lake-and-Alps view, a Michelin dining room, and the privacy of a luxury boutique — a combination with almost no rival in Zurich. If your picture of the trip is opening the curtains to the lake and the Alps, walking the water, coming back to dinner at the 1-Michelin-star Eden Kitchen, then closing the night with a cocktail in the Starck-designed La Muna Bar, this is about as right as it gets. If you want big chain-luxury rooms or a resort-sized spa, it may not be your answer, and the rates are among the highest in the city.
