🚆 Getting around Dar es Salaam
Julius Nyerere Airport (DAR)
About 10 km from the centre. A taxi or hotel transfer is the easiest way in (30–45 minutes depending on traffic). It's the main hub for onward flights to Arusha and Zanzibar.
DART Bus Rapid Transit
Dedicated-lane express buses running 05:00–23:00, with fares around 650 TZS. The fastest, cheapest way along the main corridors and a good way to skip the traffic jams.
Bajaji & dala dala
Bajaji (three-wheel tuk-tuks) are great for short hops within a neighborhood. Dala dala minibuses are dirt cheap but crowded and confusing; boda boda motorbike taxis are fast but mind your safety.
Ferry to Zanzibar
Azam Marine fast ferries leave the city-centre port near Kivukoni for Stone Town several times daily, taking about two hours. Buy tickets ahead, especially in high season.
Cash & M-Pesa
Use Tanzanian shillings (TZS); US dollars are accepted mainly in tourist spots. Mobile payment via M-Pesa and Airtel Money is everywhere — but keep cash for bajaji rides and market stalls.
Where to go next near Dar es Salaam
Frequently asked — where to stay in Dar es Salaam
Which area should I stay in Dar es Salaam?+
For safety and good restaurants, choose Masaki or Oyster Bay (near Coco Beach). Msasani Peninsula suits families and is handy for boats to the islands. If you're just stopping one night before the Zanzibar ferry, stay in the City Centre / Kivukoni area close to the port.
How do I get to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam?+
Take an Azam Marine fast ferry from the city-centre port near Kivukoni to Stone Town — about two hours, with several departures a day. Alternatively, fly from DAR airport in roughly 20 minutes. Book ferry tickets in advance, especially during high season.
When is the best time to visit Dar es Salaam?+
Aim for the dry season, June to October — drier, less humid weather that's ideal for island trips and outdoor activities. The city is hot and humid year-round (29–32°C); the long rains run March to May, so it's best to avoid that window.
