Interlaken means "between the lakes," and it sits between the two blue lakes of Thun and Brienz. It is a resort town and the main gateway to the Jungfrau massif in the Bernese Oberland region. From here you can take the train up to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, or head to dream villages like Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren. The town is also Switzerland's adventure-sports capital.

Should I stay in Interlaken or in a mountain village?+
Interlaken is convenient for shops, restaurants and onward travel, making it a good main base. Mountain villages like Grindelwald or Wengen are closer to the mountain views but are quieter with fewer dining options.
Is Jungfraujoch worth it, or is it too expensive?+
The train fare is fairly pricey, but it is a Top-of-Europe experience you cannot get elsewhere. Check the weather forecast first — if the skies are clear it is well worth it. A Swiss Travel Pass discounts part of the fare.
How many days should I spend in Interlaken?+
At least 2-3 days, since you use it as a base to go up the mountain, visit the valley villages and cruise the lakes. If you love adventure, add a day for paragliding or rafting.
