Where to stay in Saint-Louis — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Picture a French colonial town perched on a slender island in the mouth of the Senegal River — pastel facades, wrought-iron balconies, weathered wooden shutters, and the long iron span of the Faidherbe Bridge stitching the island to the mainland. This is Saint-Louis, known locally as Ndar, once the capital of French West Africa and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It moves at its own unhurried pace: faded grandeur on every corner, a riot of color in the fishing quarter, a world-class jazz festival each May, and easy access to Djoudj National Park, one of the planet's great bird sanctuaries. This guide covers where to stay, what to see, and what to eat, all in one place.
Why stay in Saint-Louis
A living heritage city
Capital of French West Africa from 1895 to 1902, Saint-Louis still wears its colonial grid of pastel townhouses and iron balconies almost intact. UNESCO listed it in 2000, and the old town remains beautifully lived-in.
The iconic Faidherbe Bridge
A long iron bridge links the island to the mainland and is the city's signature image, often associated with Gustave Eiffel's workshops. At golden hour its arches glow in the river's reflection.
Gateway to Djoudj
About 60 km away, Djoudj is one of the world's most important wetland bird reserves. From November to March, well over a million migratory birds arrive — flamingos, pelicans, herons and more.
West Africa's jazz capital
Every May the Saint-Louis International Jazz Festival turns the whole town into a stage, with headline concerts plus free live music spilling across squares and bars.

🚆 Getting around Saint-Louis
Fly into Dakar first
The main gateway is Blaise Diagne International (DSS) near Dakar, about 3 hours from Saint-Louis by road. Air Senegal also runs occasional ~45-minute domestic flights into Saint-Louis.
Sept-place from Dakar
Shared seven-seat taxis (old Peugeot wagons) are the classic option — roughly 10,000 CFA (~$17) per person and about 4 hours from Dakar's bus stations.
Car hire / private transfer
The N2 highway from Dakar is well maintained and easy to drive, or pre-book a private airport transfer. Best for families or groups who want comfort.
Get around town on foot, cart or bike
The island is tiny (about 2 km long, ~400 m wide), so walking covers most of it. Or take a horse-drawn calèche, rent a bike, or hop a pirogue across the water.
Cash in CFA francs
The West African CFA franc (XOF) rules here — carry cash, especially for markets, local eateries and transport. Cards are accepted only at some larger hotels.
Where to go next near Saint-Louis
Frequently asked — where to stay in Saint-Louis
How many days do I need in Saint-Louis?+
The island itself is walkable in 1-2 days, but to add Djoudj bird park and a Langue de Barbarie boat trip, plan on 2-3 nights. If you visit during the May jazz festival, allow even more time.
When is the best time to visit?+
The dry season (November to May) has the most pleasant weather for walking and birding, with migratory birds peaking November to March. The International Jazz Festival is in May — book accommodation well ahead.
What's the easiest way to get there from Dakar?+
The simplest option is a sept-place shared taxi (about 10,000 CFA per person, ~4 hours), or hire/drive a car along the N2 in roughly 3 hours. On some days Air Senegal flies the ~45-minute domestic hop.
