Where to stay in Goree — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Gorée Island (Île de Gorée) is a tiny 18-hectare island just 2 km off the Dakar harbour — a 20-minute ferry ride that lands you in another world entirely. There are no cars here, only narrow stone lanes, pastel houses draped in bougainvillea, and a quiet weighed down by history. From the 15th to the 19th century Gorée was one of the largest slave-trading posts on the African coast, and its Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) and "Door of No Return" made it Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1978). Today Gorée is an island of artists, museums and memory — a place travellers come to so they don't forget.
Why stay in Goree
History you must see in person
The Maison des Esclaves and Door of No Return tell the transatlantic slave trade story without flinching — a site visited by Mandela, Obama and the Pope.
A car-free island
The whole island is walkable, with no traffic and no horns — just narrow stone lanes, pastel facades and bougainvillea. Slow travel at its purest.
An island of artists
Painters' studios, sand-painting artisans and craft shops line the alleys — a living creative community, not just a museum frozen in time.
So close to Dakar
Easy as a day trip from the capital, or stay overnight in a small guesthouse to experience the island once the day-trippers have left.

Should I stay on Gorée or in Dakar?+
Most visitors do Gorée as a day trip from Dakar since the ferry is only 20 minutes. But to experience the island once the crowds leave, spend a night in one of its small guesthouses — the atmosphere after dark is completely different.
How long do I need on Gorée?+
Half a day to a full day is ideal — enough to see the Maison des Esclaves, the IFAN Museum, climb Le Castel, browse the artists' alleys and have a seafront lunch. Slow travellers can easily fill a whole day.
Is Gorée safe to visit?+
Yes — it's a popular, well-touristed site with visitors throughout the day. Take the usual care with valuables, bring your passport and CFA cash, and consider a local guide at the Maison des Esclaves to understand the history more deeply.
