Where to stay in Lalomanu — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Lalomanu is widely regarded as the most beautiful beach in Samoa — and Lonely Planet once named it one of the top 10 beaches in the world (2010). Stretching along the southeastern tip of Upolu island, its powdery white sand and glass-clear turquoise lagoon look out to the dramatic green cone of Nu'utele island. The real magic here is the open-sided beach fale: a simple thatched hut right on the sand where you fall asleep to the waves and wake up steps from the water, all run by local Samoan families. Add the world-famous To Sua Ocean Trench just a 20-minute drive away, and you have Samoa at its purest — unpolished, genuine, and impossibly photogenic.

🚆 Getting around Lalomanu

✈️

Fly into Faleolo (APW)

Faleolo International Airport sits on the western side of Upolu, about 40 minutes from Apia. From there you head southeast across the island to reach Lalomanu.

🚗

Rent a car

The easiest option. Rental agencies operate at the airport and in Apia. The drive along the south coast takes about 1hr 15min (~61 km). A local driving permit, sold in Apia, is required.

🚕

Taxi from Apia

You can hire a taxi straight from Apia to Lalomanu. Always agree the fare before setting off, and note that drivers typically take cash in tala only.

🚌

Colourful local buses

Samoa's wooden buses are charming but run on no fixed timetable and thin out in the afternoon and evening. Best for the patient and flexible; fares are cheap, paid in cash on alighting.

💵

Carry Samoan Tala (cash)

The currency is the Samoan Tala (T$), exchanged at the airport or in Apia. Most fales and local spots around Lalomanu accept cash only, so bring enough tala with you.

Where to go next near Lalomanu

Frequently asked — where to stay in Lalomanu

Can I visit Lalomanu as a day trip from Apia?+

Yes — it's about 61 km and a 1hr 15min drive, so a return day trip is doable. But the real magic is staying at least one night in a beach fale to catch the sunrise over Nu'utele island and an evening fiafia show.

What is staying in a beach fale actually like?+

A fale is an open-sided hut on the sand with a mattress and mosquito net, usually with shared bathrooms and breakfast and dinner included. It's deliberately simple — bring a torch, insect repellent and cash in tala. Some operators also offer enclosed fales with air-con and en-suite.

When is the best time to visit Lalomanu?+

The dry season from May to October brings the sunniest weather and clearest water for snorkeling, with June to September the pick of the bunch. November to April is wetter and more humid. Temperatures stay around 24-32°C all year.
