Where to stay in Apia — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Apia is the capital and largest city of Samoa, strung along a working harbour on the north coast of Upolu. It's small, walkable, and refreshingly unhurried — a place where traditional Fa'a Samoa ('the Samoan way') sits comfortably beside modern Pacific island life. Start your morning at the bustling Maketi Fou produce market, watch the daily catch come in at the harbourside fish market, photograph the landmark clock tower, and step inside the beautifully restored Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Then head up to Vailima for the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum — the Treasure Island author spent his final years here and is buried on the summit of Mt Vaea above the house. Best of all, Apia is the natural base for exploring the rest of Upolu: the famous To Sua Ocean Trench and the white-sand beaches of the south coast are an easy drive away.
Why stay in Apia
A capital you can walk

Footsteps of a famous writer
Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, spent his last years at Vailima. The villa still holds his belongings, and a trail climbs to his hilltop tomb on Mt Vaea.
Nature on the doorstep
Snorkel the Palolo Deep right in town, slide down the lava chutes at Papase'ea Sliding Rocks just outside it, or drive out to the photogenic To Sua Ocean Trench.
Living Samoan culture
The Samoa Cultural Village demonstrates Fa'a Samoa, the earth-oven umu, and weaving — while fiafia nights pair traditional dance with a buffet of local dishes.

🚆 Getting around Apia
Faleolo Airport (APW)
Samoa's main international airport sits about 35 km west of Apia, a 45–60 minute drive. Currency exchange and ATMs are available at the airport.
Airport to town
Public buses leave from the road outside the terminal for WS$5. A dedicated hotel shuttle (book at the tourist booth in arrivals) runs to major hotels for WS$12 each way.
Taxis
A taxi from the airport into Apia costs around WS$40, and they're easy to flag in town. Always agree the fare before you set off — drivers take cash in tala only.
Colourful local buses
Samoa's hand-painted wooden buses are part of the charm — cheap, but schedules are loose. Great for the experience; for touring the island, renting a car is far easier.
Cash & ATMs
The currency is the Samoan Tala (WS$) and Sene. ANZ and Westpac have ATMs around Apia and at the airport, but carry cash — small shops and taxis rely on it.

When is the best time to visit Apia?+
The dry season from May to October is best, with June to September the driest and sunniest. Lower rainfall means clearer water for snorkelling and easier island touring. The wet season (Nov–Apr) is hotter and rainier but cheaper for accommodation.
Does Apia have good swimming beaches?+
The city itself is mostly harbour-front and has no major white-sand beaches (there's a small beach at Vaiala and snorkelling at Palolo Deep). For classic white sand and beach fale, you'll want to drive to the south coast of Upolu.
Can I use Apia as a base to explore the island?+
Absolutely — it's the main base on Upolu. The famous To Sua Ocean Trench is roughly a 45-minute to one-hour-plus drive away, and Lalomanu Beach on the south coast is doable as a day trip. Rent a car or hire a taxi for convenience.
