Where to stay in Maafushi — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks

Maafushi is the Maldives' best-known local island and the gateway to seeing the Maldives without paying private-resort prices. Barely 1.3 km long, this little island in Kaafu Atoll was the first inhabited island allowed to open guesthouses back in 2010. Today it packs 50-plus stays, beachfront cafes, dive shops and Bikini Beach — the one stretch where visitors can swim and sunbathe in swimwear. The real draw is the water: snorkel with turtles and reef fish, chase whale sharks and manta rays, picnic on a sandbank in the middle of the ocean, then crash at a beachfront guesthouse for a fraction of resort rates. This guide helps you pick the right zone first, then choose your stay.

Why stay in Maafushi

💸

The Maldives on a budget

See the Maldives without the four-figure-a-night resort bill. Beachfront guesthouses run a fraction of resort rates, and you pay for meals and ocean trips as you go — full control over your spend.

🐠

Clear water, reefs close to shore

Top snorkeling sites are a short boat ride away — Turtle Garden, Banana Reef and the house reefs ring the island. Expect turtles, blacktip reef sharks and clouds of bright fish on nearly every trip.

⛱️

Postcard sandbanks

The signature day out: a boat drops you on a pure-white sandbank mid-ocean with shade, seating and lunch laid out. Swim, snorkel the nearby reef and sunbathe like you have a private island for the afternoon.

🏘️

Real island life

Unlike a sealed-off resort, this is a working Maldivian community — mosque, school, market and local cafes. Wander the sandy lanes and you see everyday island life no resort can offer.

How do I get to Maafushi from Male airport?+

The fastest way is a speedboat from Velana airport, ~30-45 minutes for about USD 25-30 per person — book ahead through your guesthouse. The cheapest is the public ferry from Villingili terminal in Male (~USD 3-5, about 90 minutes), running daily except Fridays. For the ferry you first take a short ferry from the airport into Male.

How many days do I need in Maafushi?+

Most visitors stay 2-4 nights — enough for a sandbank day, a snorkeling or whale-shark day, plus time to relax at Bikini Beach and wander the island. Many add a trip to a nearby local island or a day visit to a luxury resort.

Can you drink alcohol on Maafushi?+

Maafushi is a Muslim local island, so alcohol cannot be sold or consumed on the island. If you want a drink you'll need to take a boat to an offshore floating bar that some tours arrange. Dress modestly in the community area — swimwear is allowed only at Bikini Beach.
