Where to stay in Malé — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Malé is one of the most densely packed capital cities on Earth — over 200,000 people stacked onto a single island barely 8 square kilometres across, all pastel high-rises crowding a turquoise lagoon. This is not the overwater-villa postcard you came to the Maldives for; it's the real, lived-in Maldives — a heaving fish market, a 400-year-old coral-stone mosque, the golden dome of the Islamic Centre, and tea shops (hotaa) frying up hot hedhikaa snacks. Most travellers stay in Malé or neighbouring Hulhumalé as the gateway to resort atolls across the country — an overnight before or after a seaplane, or a budget-friendly taste of city life before heading out to the islands.
Why stay in Malé
Base before & after flights
Velana International Airport (MLE) sits on the adjacent island of Hulhulé — a 10-minute ferry or taxi hop away. It's the natural overnight base before a seaplane or speedboat to your resort, and for catching early-morning departures.
The Maldives on a budget
Guesthouses in Malé and Hulhumalé cost a fraction of an overwater resort, making this the entry point for backpackers who want to experience the Maldives without paying thousands a night.
The real Maldivian culture
The 400-year-old Hukuru Miskiy coral mosque, the golden Islamic Centre, the National Museum and the fish market show you a side of local life that no resort can — the country's living capital.
Hub for every island
Malé's harbours are the launch point for speedboats, public ferries and seaplanes to atolls nationwide — including budget-friendly local islands like Maafushi.

🚆 Getting around Malé
Velana Airport (MLE)
The country's main international airport, on the adjacent island of Hulhulé. Seaplanes and domestic flights to the atolls depart from here, so an overnight in Hulhumalé is the easiest setup for early flights.
Airport–Malé ferry
Public ferries run frequently, roughly every 10-20 minutes, and the crossing takes under 10 minutes for a tiny fare (no service on Fridays and public holidays). The cheapest way into town.
Taxi & Sinamalé Bridge
Taxis cross the Sinamalé Bridge from the airport into Malé or Hulhumalé in about 15 minutes for a few dollars. Malé island itself is tiny — almost everything is walkable.
Speedboats & public ferries
Malé's harbours run speedboats to resorts and MTCC public ferries to local islands such as Maafushi (about US$2 one way, Saturday-Thursday, no Friday service) — the budget option.
Money & payments
The currency is the Rufiyaa (MVR, about 15.4 to the US dollar), though US dollars are widely accepted and cards work at larger shops and hotels. The whole country is dry outside licensed resorts.

See this city's guide →Frequently asked — where to stay in Malé
Should I stay on Malé island or in Hulhumalé?+
If you have an early seaplane or flight, or want a sandy beach and wide, clean streets, choose Hulhumalé — it's right by the airport, just across the bridge. If you'd rather walk to the mosques, fish market and soak up capital-city life, stay on Malé island in Henveiru or Maafannu.
Can I drink alcohol in Malé?+
No — the entire Maldives is dry, and alcohol can only be bought and consumed in licensed resorts. You can't bring it into the country (it's seized at the airport), so there are no bars in Malé or on local islands, and you should dress modestly in public.
How do I get from the airport into Malé, and how long does it take?+
Velana Airport is on the adjacent island, with two routes in: the public ferry (every 10-20 minutes, under a 10-minute crossing, cheapest) or a taxi across the Sinamalé Bridge (about 15 minutes). Both reach Malé and Hulhumalé.
