Where to stay in Vaduz — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein, the tiny principality wedged between Switzerland and Austria. The whole town has only about 5,700 residents and you can walk its core in 20 minutes, yet it punches far above its weight — Vaduz Castle looms on a hill above the rooftops, the traffic-free Städtle is lined with black-basalt art museums, and the principality's world-famous postage stamps and 300-year-old princely Pinot Noir cellars are all here. Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc (CHF) and has no airport of its own, but Zurich is barely an hour's drive away. It works perfectly as a day trip and rewards an overnight stay for anyone who wants to soak up one of the world's smallest capitals.
Why stay in Vaduz
A prince's castle overhead
Vaduz Castle dates to the 12th century and sits roughly 120 m above town. It's still the royal family's home, so the interior is off-limits — but the short walk up to it for free views over the town and Rhine valley is the city's signature moment.
Museums all within a stroll
The single pedestrian street, Städtle, packs the black-basalt Kunstmuseum, the National Museum and the free Postage Stamp Museum into a few hundred meters — a rare density of culture for a town this size.
300 years of royal wine
The Hofkellerei, the Prince of Liechtenstein's own cellars, has produced Pinot Noir for over three centuries. Book a tasting, walk the vineyards, and dine at Michelin-starred Restaurant Torkel set right among the vines.
A doorway to the Alps
The town sits on the Rhine at 455 m, but half an hour uphill takes you to the mountain ski village of Malbun — making Vaduz a base for summer hiking and winter skiing alike.

🚆 Getting around Vaduz
Zurich Airport (ZRH)
Liechtenstein has no airport of its own. The nearest major hub is Zurich, about an hour's drive away, or reachable by train plus a connecting bus.
Train to Sargans or Buchs
Take a train from Zurich to Sargans (Switzerland), about 1 hour, or alight at Buchs and connect by bus into Vaduz. These two stations are the main gateways to Liechtenstein.
Lime-green LIEmobil buses
Liechtenstein's yellow-and-green buses link every town. Lines 11/12E run Sargans-Schaan-Vaduz every 15-30 minutes; tickets cost around 3.40 CHF and can be bought on board.
The center is walkable
Central Vaduz is tiny — the Städtle pedestrian street takes about 20 minutes end to end, and the castle, museums and shops are all within easy walking distance.
Pay in Swiss francs (CHF)
Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc; some shops accept euros (change given in francs). Cards are widely accepted — keep coins handy for bus tickets and the passport stamp.

Frequently asked — where to stay in Vaduz
Is a day trip to Vaduz enough?+
For the main highlights, yes. The town is so small that the castle walk, museums and the Städtle fit into half a day to a full day, which is why many visitors stop in from Zurich or on a Swiss tour. But to taste the royal wines or head up to Malbun in the mountains, an overnight is well worth it.
What currency does Liechtenstein use, and do I need a visa?+
It uses the Swiss franc (CHF). Liechtenstein is in the Schengen Area, so a Schengen visa (e.g. via Switzerland or Austria) gets you in — there's no separate border control.
Can you go inside Vaduz Castle?+
No — the castle is the royal family's residence and the interior is closed to the public. But you can walk a short trail up to the castle walls for free to take photos and enjoy views over the town and the Rhine valley.
