Where to stay in Vientiane — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Vientiane is the sleepiest national capital in Southeast Asia — and that is the whole point. While Bangkok roars, Laos's capital ambles along the Mekong River where you sip iced Lao coffee or cold Beerlao and watch the sun drop behind Thailand. The icons: the gold Pha That Luang stupa (the national symbol), the Patuxai victory arch, and Wat Si Saket, the city's oldest temple. Wattay Airport (VTE) sits just 3-5 km from the center, with 1.5-hour direct flights from Bangkok. Thai Baht is widely accepted, so there is no need to juggle Kip.
Why stay in Vientiane

The nation's gold stupa
The ~45m Pha That Luang glows at golden hour, paired with the 1818 Wat Si Saket and the lucky Wat Si Muang shrine.
French colonial soul
Faded colonial shophouses, strong Lao coffee, fresh baguettes, and khao jee pate sandwiches give the city a real Indochine flavor.
A gateway to Laos
The high-speed Laos-China Railway reaches Vang Vieng in about an hour and Luang Prabang in roughly two — onward travel is effortless.

🚆 Getting around Vientiane
Wattay Airport (VTE)
Just 3-5 km from town. A taxi or tuk-tuk runs ~60,000-80,000 LAK ($3-4) and takes about 15 minutes; the Airport Line bus (No. 44) is cheaper.

The main way to get around. Always agree the fare before you climb in — short hops in town run roughly 30,000-50,000 LAK.
LOCA app
Laos's homegrown ride-hailing app (Grab does not work here). Fixed fares, no haggling, in-app payment — the easiest option for visitors.

The center is tiny and flat — temples, Patuxai, and the riverfront are all walkable, and bike rentals cover the rest for a couple of dollars.
Laos-China Railway
The station is ~16 km out of town. High-speed trains reach Vang Vieng in ~1 hr and Luang Prabang in ~2 hr — book tickets ahead.

Where should I stay in Vientiane?+
First-timers should base in Chanthabouly (downtown), within walking distance of Patuxai, the Nam Phu fountain, and Wat Si Saket. For sunset views pick the Mekong Riverside (Quai Fa Ngum); for budget travel, Ban Anou near the night market has plenty of guesthouses.
How many days do I need in Vientiane?+
Two days cover the main icons — Pha That Luang, Patuxai, Wat Si Saket, the riverside, and Buddha Park. Add 2-3 more if you plan to take the train onward to Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang.
Is Vientiane easy to reach, and do I need a visa?+
Very easy — it is a 1.5-hour flight from Bangkok, or you can take the train to Nong Khai and cross the Friendship Bridge. Visa-on-arrival is about $30-45 for 30 days (Thai passport holders enter visa-free), and Thai Baht is accepted almost everywhere.
