Where to stay in Luang Prabang — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Luang Prabang is a small town curled onto a peninsula where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet in northern Laos. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, it still holds onto everything that made it special: more than 30 gilded temples, cream-coloured French colonial shophouses, and a pace so unhurried you start walking slower yourself. At dawn, monks file silently through the streets collecting sticky rice; at dusk, everyone climbs Mount Phousi for sunset over the Mekong, then drifts down into the night market for a hot bowl of Luang Prabang khao soi. If you are tired of cities in a rush, this is the cure.

🚆 Getting around Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang Airport (LPQ)
About 4 km from town with direct flights from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hanoi and Vientiane. A taxi or tuk-tuk into town takes 10-15 minutes.
Laos-China high-speed rail
The station sits roughly 12 km outside town (about 25 minutes by taxi). Vientiane is just ~2 hours away, or head north toward Boten and China.
Tuk-tuks & songthaews
The main way to get around. Always agree the fare first. Charter a tuk-tuk return to Kuang Si Falls, or share a seat with others to cut the cost.
Walking & cycling
The old town is tiny and walkable. Rent a bicycle for a few dollars a day and cruise the riverfront, easily the nicest way to explore.
Money & payments
Lao kip (LAK) is king. Tourist spots take USD or baht but at poor rates. Carry cash, ATMs charge high fees, and cards work only at bigger hotels and restaurants.

When is the best time to visit Luang Prabang?+
November to March is ideal: dry, cool and clear, with rivers high enough for boat trips. Skip the rainy season (June-October) when paths get slippery, and be aware March-April can bring smoky haze from agricultural burning.
How do I watch the alms ceremony respectfully?+
Arrive before the monks set off (around 5:30-6:00am), dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, keep your distance, don't use flash, and never push a camera into a monk's face. If you offer rice, buy it from a proper vendor and do it with genuine respect.
How do I get from town to Kuang Si Falls?+
Kuang Si Falls is about 30 km away. Most people charter a tuk-tuk or share a minivan return; the drive is roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Go in the morning to beat the crowds and leave time to swim in the blue pools.
