Where to stay in Dead Sea — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Jordan's Dead Sea shore sits at the lowest point on Earth's surface, around 430 metres below sea level, where water nearly 10 times saltier than the ocean lets you float effortlessly on your back. The ritual is simple: coat yourself in mineral-rich black mud, drift in the warm brine, then retreat to a lakeside spa resort. Almost all hotels cluster in Sweimeh, just an hour from Amman, making it an easy base for a wellness, spa or honeymoon escape.
Why stay in Dead Sea
You actually float
At roughly 34% salinity the water is so dense it lifts you to the surface. Lie back, relax, and read a book mid-lake. It's a sensation you can barely find anywhere else on the planet.
World-class mineral spa
The shoreline's black mud is packed with magnesium, potassium and 20-plus minerals prized for skin care. Nearly every resort runs a full mineral spa right on the water.
Stand on Earth's lowest land
The Dead Sea shore is the lowest dry land on the planet, about 430 m below sea level. The air is oxygen-rich and the sun is naturally filtered by the extra atmosphere.
Sacred sites nearby
A short drive reaches Bethany Beyond the Jordan (the baptism site of Jesus), Lot's Cave and the hilltop fortress of Machaerus, key biblical and archaeological landmarks.

🚆 Getting around Dead Sea
Queen Alia Airport (AMM)
Jordan's main airport near Amman, about 62 km from the Dead Sea resort strip, roughly a 1-hour drive. It's the starting point for almost every trip.
Airport taxi
The easiest door-to-door option. Airport taxis have posted fares of around 35 JD and wait outside the arrivals hall. Confirm the price before you go.
JETT bus
JETT runs coaches from Amman to Amman Tourist Beach (often as a day trip), but there is no direct bus from the airport to the resorts.
Car rental + Highway 65
The Dead Sea Highway (Route 65) is a well-signed dual carriageway. Rentals run ~25-40 USD/day and self-driving is handy for Wadi Mujib and the hot springs.
Cash in dinars (JOD)
The currency is the Jordanian dinar. Resorts take cards, but carry cash for beach entry, tips and small shops. ATMs are available at the larger resorts.

What's the best way to reach the Dead Sea from Amman?+
The easiest option is an airport taxi or private transfer from Queen Alia Airport, about 1 hour and 62 km away; taxis have posted fares of roughly 35 JD. If you plan to explore further, rent a car and take Highway 65. JETT buses serve the public beach but don't run directly to the resorts.
What should I watch out for when floating?+
The water is intensely salty, so keep it out of your eyes and mouth, and don't shave or wax beforehand or it will sting. Float for no more than 15-20 minutes at a time, wear water shoes against the sharp salt crust, and rinse with fresh water right after.
When is the best time to visit the Dead Sea?+
Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) bring pleasant 20-30°C weather. Summer sun is fierce because you're below sea level. To hike the Wadi Mujib Siq Trail, you must visit between April and October.
