Where to stay in Aqaba — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Aqaba is Jordan's only coastal city, sitting at the very tip of the Red Sea on the Gulf of Aqaba. Its big draw is warm water year-round and coral reefs that sit right off the beach — you can wade in a few metres and already be swimming over bright fish and coral. The city is also home to the Mamluk-era Aqaba Castle, the early-Islamic ruins of Ayla, and serves as the gateway to Wadi Rum, the famous desert just an hour away. A handy bonus: Aqaba is a duty-free special economic zone (ASEZA), so food and shopping tend to be cheaper than elsewhere in Jordan. It's an easy base if you want sea, diving, history and desert in one trip.
Why stay in Aqaba
Reefs right off the beach
Red Sea coral sits just metres from shore, with around 500 fish species. There are shallow snorkel spots plus deeper sites like the Cedar Pride wreck and the underwater military museum.
Warm all year
A subtropical desert climate means sun almost every day and water warm enough to swim year-round. Even winter sits around 16-20°C — ideal for escaping the cold.
Base for southern Jordan
Use Aqaba to reach Wadi Rum (~1 hr) and Petra (~2 hrs) with ease — combining sea, desert and ancient cities in a single trip.
Cheaper, duty-free
Aqaba is the ASEZA special economic zone with low taxes and duty-free goods, so dining and shopping generally cost less than in Amman or Petra.
