Where to stay in Venice — pick the right hotel, book in 3 clicks
Venice is the City of Water, built across more than 100 small islands linked by over 400 bridges and a web of canals, with no cars anywhere in the city. You get around mainly by boat: glide along the Grand Canal in a gondola, admire Gothic palaces at the water's edge, take in the magnificent St. Mark's Square, then happily lose yourself in romantic, painting-like alleyways.
Why stay in Venice
Ride a gondola
Take a truly Venetian rowboat through narrow canals cars can't reach, and listen to the gondolier sing in a romantic setting.
St. Mark's Square
The main square Napoleon called "the most beautiful drawing room in Europe," home to the basilica and bell tower.
Rialto Bridge
The oldest marble arch bridge across the Grand Canal, lined on both sides with shops and photo spots.
Murano and Burano islands
Take a boat to glassblowing Murano and candy-coloured Burano, one of the most photogenic spots around.

🚆 Getting around Venice
Vaporetto water bus
Venice's main public transport, like a water bus running along the Grand Canal. A day pass is the better value.
Walking the city
Venice has no cars, so you can cross bridges and explore the alleys on foot. Carry a map or GPS, it's easy to get lost.
Gondola
The traditional rowing boat for sightseeing along the canals. Fares are fixed per ride, so agree on the price before you board.
Santa Lucia station
The central train station sits at the end of the Grand Canal, with easy connections to Verona, Milan and Florence.

How much does a gondola ride cost?+
The official rate is around 80–90 euros for a 30-minute daytime ride, and more in the evening. A boat holds up to 5–6 people, so it's better value shared among a group.
How many days do you need in Venice?+
Two to three days is about right. Spend the first day on foot around San Marco and Rialto, the second taking a boat to Murano and Burano, and leave time to wander the quiet little alleys.
When should you avoid Venice because of flooding?+
The high-water phenomenon known as acqua alta usually happens between November and January, and St. Mark's Square can flood temporarily. Spring or early autumn is more comfortable.
